Chapter 12 - Darkness in the Foyer

The deafening crash of thousands of crystal shards raining down across the marble floor sent shockwaves through the sprawling luxury living room. Total, suffocating darkness enveloped the space as the master circuit breakers tripped all at once, plunging the grand foyer into pitch-black shadow. Elena screamed, throwing her arms over her head as sharp glass fragments bounced against the silk of her ruined wedding gown.

"Stay down!" Julian’s voice boomed through the dark, carrying an edge of primal urgency.

In the pitch black, the sound of heavy, rapid footsteps rushed down the lower landing of the grand staircase, closing the distance between the hidden intruder and the terrified group standing near the fireplace. Mariza shielded little Valentina with her own body, crouching low against the floor while clutching the dismantled stuffed rabbit tightly. Beatrice Vance slammed her ebony cane against the stone floor to signal her position, her voice cutting through the chaos without a hint of fear.

"Arthur, trigger the emergency backup floods!" Beatrice commanded sharply.

A second later, a series of heavy, amber-toned emergency floor lamps clicked on around the perimeter of the room, casting long, eerie shadows across the ruined furniture and scattered glass. In the sudden amber glow, a tall figure in a dark trench coat and a wide-brimmed hat was seen sprinting past the grandfather clock toward the side exit leading to the gardens.

"He's heading for the east terrace!" Mariza shouted, pointing directly at the fleeing silhouette.

Julian didn't hesitate. He vaulted over the mahogany coffee table, shattering the remaining documents beneath his shoes, and gave chase with relentless speed. His long strides ate up the distance across the marble floor just as the intruder burst through the glass-paneled french doors, shattering the lock into splinters. Julian slammed his shoulder hard against the frame, launching himself out onto the wet autumn grass just as a heavy downpour began to drench the Connecticut estate.

Inside the living room, Elena remained huddled against the fireplace, shivering uncontrollably as Arthur Sterling stood guard near the door with his phone pressed tightly to his ear, orchestrating the estate-wide lockdown.

"All perimeter gates are sealed. Security teams are converging on the east gardens," Arthur reported into the secure line, his sharp eyes scanning the room to ensure Beatrice and the child were safe.

Beatrice leaned heavily on her cane, her cold gaze fixed on Elena, who was now weeping softly into her hands. The matriarch walked slowly toward the crouching bride, her expression as hard as granite.

"The game is entirely over, Elena," Beatrice said quietly, her voice carrying a terrifying finality. "While Julian deals with our unexpected visitor in the garden, you and I are going to have a very private conversation about who funded your little corporate coup—because the person who just blew out that chandelier wasn't working alone."

Elena looked up, her face pale, bruised by panic, and streaked with tears. "You... you don't understand. If I tell you who gave me the blueprint, they’ll kill my family. They’ll—"

Before Elena could finish her sentence, the heavy french doors burst open again, and Julian stepped back inside the room, completely drenched from the rain, holding a bloodstained leather glove in one hand and a familiar silver signet ring in the other.
