Chapter 4 - The Shadow of the Past

The sharp click of Elena’s designer heels echoed across the marble floor as she lunged forward, her hand clawing empty air just inches from Mariza’s apron. The maid had moved with surprising speed, stepping backward and shielding little Valentina with her entire body. The worn leather journal—bearing the faded gold initials E.V. and a date from five years past—disappeared completely into the deep fabric pocket of Mariza’s black uniform.

"Give me that book right now, you insolent servant!" Elena shrieked, all pretense of aristocratic composure shattering into a million pieces. Her face flushed a mottled crimson as she pointed a manicured finger directly into Mariza’s unblinking eyes. "That is private property! It has no business being in this house, and it certainly has no business in your hands!"

Mariza didn't flinch. Her posture remained rigid, protective, and eerily calm, contrasting sharply with the bride's frantic outburst. Little Valentina buried her face deep into Mariza’s shoulder again, whimpering softly as she clutched the frayed gray stuffed rabbit.

"I found it on the floor, Madam," Mariza replied evenly, her voice steady despite the palpable hostility radiating from the bride. "If it is truly your private property, perhaps you can explain why it was hidden beneath the grandfather clock in a house you supposedly never stepped foot in before you met Mr. Vance."

Elena’s breath caught in her throat. The room seemed to spin slightly. The grand luxury living room, with its high ceilings and glittering crystal chandelier, suddenly felt like a cage closing in around her. That journal contained secrets she had buried deep, secrets tied to a life she had meticulously erased before trapping Julian Vance into marriage. If Julian saw the contents of those pages, her entire empire of lies would crumble instantly.

Before Elena could formulate a vicious retort, the heavy oak front doors swung open with a slow, ominous creak.

Julian Vance stepped back into the living room, having shed his suit jacket and loosened his silk tie. His expression was dark, shadowed by the dimming autumn light filtering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. He took in the scene instantly: Elena’s panic-stricken expression, Mariza’s defensive stance, and the unnatural tension vibrating in the air.

"Is there a problem here?" Julian’s voice cut through the silence like a razor-sharp blade. He walked slowly toward them, his tall frame blocking the only exit to the hallway.

Elena swallowed hard, forcing a tight, trembling smile onto her lips as she turned to face her new husband. Her mind raced desperately for an excuse.

"No problem at all, darling," Elena lied smoothly, though her voice still carried a sharp edge of panic. "Just a minor misunderstanding about... wedding logistics. Mariza was just heading upstairs to put Valentina to bed, weren't you, Mariza?"

Mariza held Julian’s piercing gaze for a long, heavy moment. Slowly, deliberately, the maid let her hand slide down to brush against the hidden pocket where the locked journal rested.

"Actually, Mr. Vance," Mariza said clearly, a faint, knowing smile touching the corner of her lips. "I think the master of the house should see what your bride left hidden in the floorboards before we discuss bedtime."
