Chapter 10 - The Cold-Blooded Betrayal

The glint of the polished steel handcuffs in Arthur Sterling’s grip caught the brilliant, unforgiving light of the crystal chandelier, casting a harsh reflection across Elena Vance’s terror-stricken face. The grand luxury living room felt less like a home and more like a high-security holding cell. Beatrice Vance stood tall and unyielding, leaning on her ebony cane, while Julian watched with an expression of complete, chilling detachment, his whiskey glass still balanced effortlessly in his hand.

"Handcuffs?" Elena finally found her voice, though it emerged as a ragged, desperate shriek. She backed away until her spine pressed hard against the cold marble fireplace. "You can't arrest me! We were just at the altar! There are hundreds of guests waiting in the ballroom right now for our reception! If you do this, the scandal will destroy the Vance stock value overnight!"

Julian took a slow, deliberate sip of his whiskey before setting the crystal glass down on the sideboard with a sharp clink.

"Let the stock drop, Elena," Julian said, his voice entirely devoid of warmth or hesitation. "My legal team already filed an emergency injunction forty minutes ago, freezing all public trading under a temporary restructuring status. The guests in the ballroom are currently being escorted off the property by security. As far as the public record will show by tomorrow morning, the wedding never legally took place."

Elena stared at him, her chest heaving as the horrifying magnitude of his betrayal washed over her. Two years of meticulous planning, late-night scheming, false smiles, and calculated affection—all of it had been calculated by Julian as well. He hadn't been an unsuspecting victim of her plot; he had been using her ambition to flush out her co-conspirators within the board of directors.

"You used me," Elena whispered, tears of sheer rage hot against her cheeks. "You knew I wanted the empire, so you dangled it in front of me just to get me to expose the rest of the corporate board who funded my infiltration!"

"Business is business, my dear," Beatrice interjected smoothly, a thin, cruel smile touching her lips. "You wanted to play a high-stakes game with the Vance family? You should have learned how to read your opponents first."

Arthur Sterling stepped closer, the cold steel of the cuffs glinting menacingly as he raised his hands.

Before Arthur could take another step toward Elena, a small, sudden movement broke the heavy tension in the room. Little Valentina shifted in Mariza’s arms, sliding down until her small patent-leather shoes touched the marble floor. Clutching her worn, graying stuffed rabbit tightly by its single-threaded ear, the five-year-old girl walked slowly across the polished floor toward Elena.

Everyone froze. Julian frowned, Beatrice narrowed her eyes, and Arthur lowered his hands in confusion.

Valentina stopped just two feet away from the trembling, ruined bride. The little girl looked up, her large, dark eyes completely devoid of malice or triumph, filled only with a child’s pure, uncomprehending innocence.

"Don't cry," Valentina whispered softly, her small voice echoing clearly through the cavernous room. She reached out her tiny hand and offered her beloved, ragged stuffed rabbit to Elena. "You can have bunny. It makes the scary noise go away."

Elena stared down at the stuffed toy, her entire body trembling violently as a wave of unexpected, overwhelming emotion crashed over her shattered pride—and then, Mariza’s eyes widened in sudden horror as she spotted a tiny, blinking red light hidden deep inside the rabbit’s ear.
