Chapter 13 - The Bloody Signet

The heavy autumn rain blew in through the shattered french doors, misting the edges of the sprawling luxury living room as Julian Vance stepped back inside. Water dripped from his dark hair, plastering it against his forehead, and his tailored navy blue suit was soaked through to the fabric. His chest heaved slightly from the physical exertion of the chase, but his dark eyes burned with an icy, controlled fury.

In his right hand, Julian held up a familiar silver signet ring, glistening with fresh crimson blood smeared across its engraved family crest.

Elena stopped breathing. She stared at the bloody ring in absolute horror, recognizing the unique crest instantly. It wasn't a low-level corporate spy or a hired mercenary who had fled into the gardens; it was someone seated at the absolute highest tier of the Vance family board of directors.

Elena flinched violently at the name. Marcus Vance—Julian’s paternal uncle, the second-largest shareholder of the entire conglomerate, and the man who had supposedly retired to Zurich two years ago.

"Uncle Marcus?" Julian asked, his voice dropping into a dangerous register as he looked down at his grandmother. "You knew he was still in the country?"

"I suspected," Beatrice admitted, her grip tightening on her cane until her knuckles turned white. "Marcus never forgave my husband for passing the primary CEO mantle to your father instead of him. He’s spent the last decade secretly buying up distressed debt, using pawns like Elena here to orchestrate a hostile takeover from the inside."

Julian slowly turned his cold, piercing gaze back toward Elena, who was still huddled against the marble fireplace like a broken doll. All the arrogance, all the calculated ambition that had driven her to walk down that aisle had completely evaporated, leaving behind only the pathetic reality of a pawn who had been utterly discarded by her masters.

"Did Marcus promise you a permanent seat at the board, Elena?" Julian asked softly, stepping closer to her until his looming shadow covered her entirely. "D
