Chapter 6: A Vow in the Slums**

For several long minutes, the only sound in the small apartment was the patter of rain against the windowpane and the muffled sobs of a billionaire realizing the monumental depth of what he had lost.

Julian slowly lifted his head and looked at the boy. With infinite gentleness, he extended a hand. “I’m here, Leo. I’m right here.”

Leo looked up at his mother for permission. Clara, her throat aching with sorrow, gave a faint, reluctant nod. The boy took two small steps forward and placed his tiny warm palm inside Julian’s massive, trembling hand.

Julian pulled his son into a gentle embrace, burying his face in Leo’s soft curls. “I’m sorry, buddy. Daddy didn't know where you were. But I promise you, nobody is ever going to hurt you or your mommy again.”

Rising slowly to his feet, Julian looked at Clara with eyes stripped of all corporate arrogance. In their place burned a dangerous, razor-sharp focus.

“Who did it, Clara? Who threatened you before the crash?” Julian demanded quietly.

“Three days before the accident, I received an anonymous envelope at the penthouse,” Clara recounted, her voice steadying. “It contained surveillance photos of me, along with a direct warning: *Leave Julian and surrender your claims to Vance Enterprises, or you won't survive the winter.* I was on my way to the police station to file a report when the brakes failed completely on Highway 9.”

Julian’s jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped beneath his stubble. Only three people had access to his home mail and corporate shares back then: his ambitious cousin Marcus, his former legal advisor Harold, and… Victoria’s father, Senator Sterling, who had orchestrated the merger deal.

“Pack your things,” Julian said firmly.

“No, Julian. We aren't going to your penthouse to be sitting ducks,” Clara countered.

“You’re not going to my penthouse,” Julian replied softly, unbuttoning his coat and wrapping it around her cold shoulders. “You’re going to my fortress in the Hamptons with private security. Tonight, the hunt begins.”
