Chapter 2: Shadows in the Service Alley**

The heavy steel door of the service exit slammed shut against the damp night air. Clara ran through the narrow brick alleyway behind the hotel, her breath tearing painfully through her lungs. Rain was beginning to fall over the city streets, slicking the cobblestones beneath her worn non-slip work shoes.
She ducked into the shadows beneath an rusted fire escape, clutching her chest. Her heart pounded like a trapped bird. *He recognized me,* she thought in terror. *After five years of absolute silence, he saw me.*
Footsteps echoed sharply against the wet asphalt. Julian burst out of the heavy exit doors, his suit jacket discarded, his crisp white dress shirt rapidly soaking through in the downpour. He stood under the dim yellow glow of a streetlamp, searching frantically into the darkness.
“Clara! I know it’s you!” Julian shouted into the rain, his voice breaking with agony. “I held your funeral! I buried an empty casket and spent five years living in a personal hell! Why did you run? Why are you hiding from me?”
Clara pressed her back flat against the freezing brick wall, tears blinding her vision. She remembered the fire. She remembered the hospital lights in a rural clinic three hundred miles away, waking up with fractured ribs and no memory of her own identity for six agonizing months. And then, when the memories finally returned, the terrifying truth had come with them: the severed brake lines of her car hadn't been an accident. Someone inside Julian’s family had tried to assassinate her.
She had stayed dead to protect herself—and to protect the child she discovered she was carrying three weeks after the crash.
“Julian…” she whispered silently from the shadows, her lips trembling. “If they find out I’m alive, they won't just kill me. They’ll kill our son.”
Julian took two heavy steps toward the alley corner, stopping barely five feet from where she stood concealed. He picked up a small laminated employee badge dropped near the puddle.
*Clara Miller — Housekeeping Services.*

A dark, fierce resolve hardened on Julian’s face. “I found you once, Clara. I won't let you vanish again.”
