Chapter 5: The Heir He Never Knew**

Before Julian could process the horrific revelation of an assassination attempt within his own circle, the quiet squeak of hinges interrupted the suffocating room.
The small bedroom door creaked open. Leo stood in the hallway in his dinosaur pajamas, rubbing his sleepy eyes with one hand while dragging his stuffed bear with the other.
“Mommy? Why is the tall man yelling at you?”
Julian froze completely. It was as if lightning had struck the center of the room. He slowly turned his head toward the small voice.
The boy looked directly up at him. Julian stared into eyes that were identical to his own, beneath the same stubborn brow and messy dark wavy curls he saw in the mirror every morning. The mathematical impossibility dissolved instantly in Julian’s mind. Five years. The timeline was unmistakable.
Julian dropped to his knees right onto the worn linoleum floor, completely careless of his stature or pride. His throat tightened so violently he could hardly draw breath. “Clara… is he…”
Clara stepped between them instinctively, her maternal protective instincts flaring. “He is my son.”
“He is *our* son,” Julian whispered, a single tear breaking past his eyelashes and rolling down his cheek. He looked up at Clara with a mixture of profound wonder and devastating heartbreak. “You were pregnant when the car went over the cliff…”
“I didn't know until weeks later,” Clara said, tears flowing freely down her face. “I had lost my memory. When it all came rushing back, I realized that if the person who cut my brakes found out I survived, they would never let my baby draw his first breath. I had to disappear, Julian. For him.”
Leo stepped forward cautiously from behind Clara’s legs, tilting his head with innocent curiosity. “Are you my daddy? Mommy said Daddy was an angel in the sky.”

Julian buried his face in his trembling hands, letting out a choked sob that shook his entire broad frame.
