Chapter 12: Learning to Love Again**

Weeks turned into months. Autumn arrived in New York, painting the trees along the Hamptons coastline in brilliant shades of crimson and gold. Julian kept his promise completely: he gave Clara absolute freedom and space.

Instead of forcing grand romantic gestures, Julian focused on the simple, everyday moments he had missed out on for five years. He woke up early to make breakfast for Leo, learning how to flip cartoon-shaped pancakes. He sat on the floor for hours assembling complex Lego castles, patiently listening to Leo explain the imaginary lore of his toy dinosaurs.

Clara watched from the kitchen doorway, her heart softening with every passing day. She saw a man desperately trying to heal the wounds of absence, not with gold or luxury, but with time, patience, and boundless affection.

One Saturday afternoon, Julian took them to a small local apple orchard far from the city paparazzi. Leo ran ahead through the rows of apple trees, laughing joyfully as Mrs. Gable cheered him on.

Julian and Clara walked side by side along the dirt path, their hands occasionally brushing against each other.

“You’re really good with him, Julian,” Clara said softly.

Julian smiled, though a hint of sadness lingered in his eyes. “I’m making up for lost time. Every minute I spent away from him is a debt I owe him for the rest of my life.”

He paused, turning to face her under the shade of a massive apple tree. “And I owe you the same debt, Clara. Not just for keeping him safe, but for enduring everything alone.”

Clara reached out, her fingers gently touching his cheek. The stubble was warm beneath her hand. “I was angry for a long time, Julian. I blamed your name, your money, your world for taking away my peaceful life. But watching you with Leo these past few months… I see the man I fell in love with ten years ago. The boy who had nothing but a dream and a good heart.”

Julian’s breath caught in his throat. For the first time in five years, he reached for her hand—and this time, Clara didn't pull away.
