Chapter 4: The Confrontation**

The heavy knock on the front door resonated through the small apartment like a gunshot.

“Mrs. Gable, please take Leo into the bedroom. Don't come out no matter what you hear,” Clara commanded in a low, steely voice.

“Mommy, who is it?” Leo asked, clutching his worn plush bear.

“Just a guest, sweetheart. Go with Grandma Gable.”

Once the bedroom door clicked shut, Clara approached the entrance. She took a deep breath, steeling the fragile fragments of her courage, and pulled the door open.

Julian stood on the threshold. Rain dripped from his dark hair onto the shoulders of his coat, but his gaze was entirely consuming, locked onto her face with an intensity that made the small room feel completely devoid of oxygen.

“You live here,” Julian said, his voice quiet, raw, and trembling with restrained shock as he looked past her at the peeling wallpaper and worn secondhand furniture. “My wife cleans hotel floors and lives in a dilapidated walk-up.”

“I am not your wife anymore, Julian,” Clara said coldly, though her voice betrayed a slight tremble. “You declared me legally dead. That makes you a free man. Go back to your penthouse. Go back to Victoria.”

“Victoria is nothing!” Julian shouted, taking a sudden step inside and closing the door behind him. “She was a business alliance forced by my board of directors! I never loved her! I have spent every waking minute of the last five years mourning you!”

He grabbed her shoulders gently, his large hands trembling against her collarbone. “Why did you run, Clara? Why did you let me suffer in that empty mansion thinking I failed to protect you?”

“Because you *couldn't* protect me!” Clara cried out, pushing him back with sudden ferocity. “Someone cut the brake line on my sedan, Julian! It wasn't an icy road. It was murder! If I came back, they would have finished the job!”

Julian’s breath hitched, the color instantly draining from his handsome face. “What… what did you just say?”
