Chapter 1: The Shattered Gala**

The grand hallway of the St. Regis Grand Ballroom fell into a suffocating silence. Julian Vance stood frozen, his hand slipping completely free from the manicured grip of Victoria Sterling. The woman standing before him in the faded sky-blue housekeeping uniform was not an illusion. It was Clara. Her chestnut hair was pinned up loosely, strands clinging to damp cheeks where fresh tears carved tracks through dust and exhaustion.
“Julian, have you completely lost your mind?” Victoria hissed, her crimson lips tightening into a furious sneer. “She is a hotel cleaner. Look at her uniform! Everyone is waiting in the VIP suite for the merger announcement.”
Julian didn't hear a word. Five years ago, Clara’s car had plunged off the coastal cliffs during a stormy winter evening. The police recovered charred wreckage and a twisted wedding band, declaring her dead after weeks of fruitless searching. Julian had spent eighteen months in an alcohol-induced stupor, building a multi-billion-dollar empire just to drown the agonizing guilt of surviving her.
“Clara…” Julian’s voice cracked, deep and ragged with raw disbelief. He stepped past the heavy vacuum hose, heedless of the tailored perfection of his bespoke tuxedo. “How… how are you alive?”
Clara backed away, her small hands gripping the steel wand of the vacuum like a shield. Her dark hazel eyes were wide with panic, darting between Julian’s predatory focus and Victoria’s venomous glare. “I’m sorry, sir. You have mistaken me for someone else. I—I only work here. Please let me finish my shift.”
“Don’t lie to me!” Julian pleaded, reaching forward. His trembling fingers barely brushed the rough polyester of her collar before she flinched violently, as if his touch burned.
“Please, Mr. Vance!” Clara gasped, her voice shaking. The name rolled off her tongue not with the intimacy of a spouse, but with the terrifying formality of an employee confronting a billionaire titan.
Before Julian could grasp her wrists, the banquet supervisor rounded the gilded corner, his walkie-talkie crackling loudly. “What’s the commotion here? Maid 402, why haven't you cleared the private floor?”
Clara seized the distraction. Leaving the vacuum where it stood, she turned and sprinted toward the service stairwell.

“Clara! Stop!” Julian roared, shoving past hotel staff and security, abandoning Victoria’s furious screams echoing down the gilded corridor.
