Chapter 8 - The Estate Lockdown

The sleek black sedan tore down the winding mountain highway, tires hissing against the damp asphalt as it crested the steep incline leading toward the iron gates of Vance Manor. In the back seat, Arthur sat in absolute silence, his weathered face illuminated only by the faint, pulsing red glow of the satellite uplink device resting in his palm. Beside him, Evelyn clutched her tablet like a lifeline, her fingers flying across the glass as she monitored the security telemetry streaming directly from the smart-home servers back at the estate.

“The perimeter alarms haven't been tripped,” Evelyn said, her voice tight with disbelief as she stared at the glowing architectural blueprints of the sprawling stone mansion. “The biometric locks on the front entrance weren't picked, and the thermal sensors show zero unauthorized heat signatures outside the main library.”

Arthur didn't take his eyes off the pulsing red light. “A professional doesn't break a lock when they already hold the physical master key, Evelyn. And they certainly don't trigger thermal alarms when they have the administrative override codes.”

“You mean… someone inside your own inner circle?” Evelyn asked, the horror dawning in her voice. “Someone who knows you inside and out?”

“My chief of security, Marcus, has managed that estate for twenty years,” Arthur said flatly, though the tightness around his eyes betrayed the profound weight of the betrayal. “He knows every hidden passage, every vault combination, and every offline server backup we possess. If the transfer originated from my private library, Marcus didn't just let them in—he rolled out the red carpet.”

The sedan slowed smoothly to a halt as it approached the towering wrought-iron security gates of the estate. Normally, the sensors would read the vehicle's transponder and swing the heavy gates open automatically. Instead, the gates remained locked shut, the amber warning lights flashing in a slow, rhythmic pulse that signaled an active system override.

“They’ve locked us out of our own property,” Evelyn whispered, staring at the flashing control panel on the stone pillar. “Mr. Vance, if they’ve locked the smart-grid firewall, we can't even get past the perimeter without triggering the explosive counter-measures.”

Arthur reached out calmly, popped open the glove compartment of the sedan, and pulled out an old-fashioned, heavy iron ring holding a single, unadorned brass key. It looked like something belonging to a medieval dungeon rather than a multi-million-dollar modern smart fortress.

“Technology fails when you rely on it too much,” Arthur said, opening his door and stepping out into the chilly mountain air. “Which is why I never surrendered my analog keys.”

He walked briskly past the automated intercom system, ignoring the flashing digital keypad entirely, and headed straight for a nondescript utility box hidden behind a thick shroud of overgrown ivy on the stone perimeter wall. He unlocked the rusted metal door with the brass key, exposing a purely mechanical lever painted in faded red safety paint.

“Hold your breath, Evelyn,” Arthur warned quietly. “This bypass hasn't been tested since nineteen-ninety-five.”
