Chapter 7 - The Master Key

Evelyn pulled her smartphone from her blazer pocket, her thumb swiping across the screen to dismiss the flashing red notification. But as she read the incoming text message from the chief IT administrator, the color drained from her face for the second time that morning. She looked up at Arthur, who was still staring calmly out through the frosted glass at the retreating federal vehicles.

“Mr. Vance,” Evelyn said, her voice trembling slightly as she held the glowing screen out toward him. “That wasn't the only alert we just received from the mainframe.”

Arthur turned slowly, his weathered face remaining impassive as he walked back toward the counter. “Speak up, Evelyn. What else has Julian managed to compromise before his arrest?”

“It’s not just Julian,” Evelyn swallowed hard, tapping the screen to bring up a secondary diagnostics log. “While the federal agents were arresting him in the lobby, the primary firewall on our central server in Geneva experienced an unauthorized override. Someone used Julian’s master administrative credentials to initiate a massive, automated asset transfer.”

Arthur’s eyes narrowed instantly, the calm demeanor evaporating to reveal the razor-sharp intellect of a self-made industrial titan. “Where are the funds moving?”

“Not to Meridian Holdings,” Evelyn whispered, her eyes wide with mounting dread. “To an unlisted Swiss depository account linked to a holding corporation we haven't seen in over a decade. A company called Vanguard Legacy.”

The name hit Arthur like a physical blow. He stopped dead in his tracks, his weathered hands clenching into tight fists inside the pockets of his canvas work jacket. For the first time all morning, genuine shock flickered across his aged features, replacing his usual stoic composure with a deep, unsettling realization.

“Vanguard Legacy,” Arthur repeated softly, testing the words on his tongue as if they were a bitter poison. “I thought that corporate shell had been dissolved back in nineteen-ninety-eight after the settlement with my former partner.”

“According to the mainframe logs, the shell corporation was only dormant on paper,” Evelyn said, frantically typing commands into her phone to trace the data stream. “The encryption keys used to authorize this transfer didn't come from Julian’s terminal. They came from a secure offline terminal located inside your private estate library.”

Arthur’s breath hitched. His private estate—a heavily guarded fortress nestled deep in the wooded hills outside the city, accessible only by a biometric security gate and monitored by a closed-circuit surveillance network that he personally designed. No one outside his inner circle even knew the location of the offline terminal, let alone possessed the biometric keys required to activate it.

“Someone is inside the manor,” Arthur said grimly, his voice dropping into a dangerous register. He reached into his back pocket, pulled out his worn leather wallet, and flipped it open to reveal a hidden compartment behind the worn leather fold. Inside sat a small, military-grade satellite transmitter no larger than a postage stamp.

Evelyn stared at the tiny device in awe. “Is that a direct uplink to your private security detail?”

May you like

“It’s a dead-man’s switch,” Arthur replied coldly, pressing his thumb hard against the tiny metallic center of the stamp. A faint green LED light flickered once before glowing a steady, ominous crimson. “And it just went active.”
