Chapter 13 - The EMP Protocol

The glowing blue diode on the magnetic EMP grenade pulsed with a frantic, rhythmic intensity as Marcus held it aloft, his face twisted in desperate rage. The freezing mountain wind tore at his tailored suit jacket as he swung back and forth on the heavy steel cable, preparing to hurl the device straight onto the stone patio where Arthur stood unyielding at the winch.

“Arthur, look out! He’s going to blow the entire system!” Evelyn screamed, throwing her hands up over her face and bracing herself for the inevitable electronic shockwave that would plunge the entire estate—and their only remaining digital evidence—into total darkness.

Instead of panicking, Arthur let go of the iron winch crank with one hand and reached calmly into the deep interior pocket of his worn canvas work jacket. He pulled out a small, heavy-duty analog Faraday pouch—the exact kind used by industrial scientists to shield sensitive components from high-voltage magnetic pulses. Without a shred of hesitation, Arthur tossed the heavy canvas pouch forward with pinpoint precision.

The pouch struck Marcus squarely across the wrist just as his arm whipped forward to throw the grenade. The sudden impact knocked the explosive device off course. Instead of landing on the balcony, the magnetic grenade slipped from Marcus’s numb fingers, plummeted through the open rotors of the hovering surveillance drone below, and magnetically clamped itself directly onto the drone’s central lithium battery pack.

For a fraction of a second, absolute silence hung in the freezing air.

Then, the EMP grenade detonated with a blinding flash of violet light. A silent, invisible wave of electromagnetic energy radiated outward, instantly frying every circuit board, sensor, and motor on the military-grade drone. The heavy aircraft let out a dying mechanical whine, its rotors seizing mid-rotation, before it plummeted straight down out of the sky like a lead weight, crashing directly into the black getaway chopper idling in the courtyard below.

A massive fireball erupted from the courtyard, illuminating the misty mountain night in a brilliant orange glow. The shockwave of the explosion rattled the reinforced glass windows of the manor, sending a cloud of thick black smoke billowing up toward the second-story balcony.

Marcus dangled from his halted cable, staring down in absolute horror as his escape route vanished into a burning heap of twisted metal and shattered rotor blades. He looked back up at Arthur, his arrogance entirely shattered, replaced by the hollow realization that he had been completely outsmarted by a man he had dismissed as an old relic of the past.

Arthur slowly resumed turning the iron winch crank, hauling his former head of security over the balcony ledge and dropping him unceremoniously onto the cold stone patio of the study.
