Chapter 12 - The Canyon Pursuit

The heavy rotors of the military-grade surveillance drone whipped the mountain air into a chaotic frenzy, kicking up dust and loose gravel across the stone patio of the second-story balcony. Marcus stood poised on the outer ledge, gripping a heavy tactical repelling cable that dropped straight down toward the lower estate courtyard where a black getaway chopper sat idling in the darkness, its rotor blades slicing through the mist.

Arthur didn't hesitate. Ignoring his age and the biting chill of the mountain wind, he lunged toward the open French doors, his weathered boots sliding across the slick stone patio.

“Mr. Vance, stop! It’s too dangerous!” Evelyn screamed, grabbing the heavy mahogany door frame to steady herself against the roaring downdraft of the drone overhead.

Arthur ignored her entirely. He reached the edge of the balcony just as Marcus grabbed the tactical repelling cable and stepped backward into the abyss, sliding rapidly down toward the waiting helicopter below. With a sudden burst of raw, unyielding adrenaline, Arthur spotted the emergency manual override winch mounted to the structural steel beam of the balcony overhang—the exact manual winch he had personally installed decades ago when he built the estate.

Without a second thought, Arthur grabbed the heavy iron hand-crank of the winch and slammed the locking gear into reverse.

The heavy steel cable supporting Marcus’s descent suddenly jerked to an agonizing halt mid-air. Down in the courtyard, Marcus let out a sharp, startled yell as his downward momentum was violently arrested fifty feet above the concrete, leaving him dangling awkwardly like a puppet on a string beneath the hovering drone.

“What the hell are you doing? Let go!” Marcus roared up into the wind, frantically trying to unclip his harness as the heavy cable strained under his weight.

“You forgot the cardinal rule of designing my estate, Marcus,” Arthur called down, his voice cutting cleanly through the roar of the rotor blades. “Every security feature you installed has a manual analog back-door that only the creator knows about.”

Arthur began turning the heavy iron crank with steady, powerful rotations, hauling the steel cable—and Marcus—slowly back upward toward the balcony ledge.

Marcus thrashed against the harness, realizing he was being reeled in like a trapped fish. He reached frantically into his suit jacket, pulling out a heavy magnetic EMP grenade—the ultimate weapon designed to fry every electronic circuit within a fifty-foot radius, including the estate’s remaining defenses.

“If I'm going down, I’m taking the whole smart-grid with me!” Marcus screamed, pulling the safety pin with his teeth and preparing to hurl the glowing device directly onto the balcony floor where Arthur and Evelyn stood.
