Chapter 4 - The Hidden Audit

Back upstairs in the brightly lit boutique, the atmosphere remained frozen in an agonizing stasis. Julian stared at his polished leather shoes, unable to meet Arthur’s steady gaze. The older man simply leaned back against the counter, calmly examining the intricate second hand of the luxury watch through the glass, completely unbothered by the humiliation he had inadvertently caused.
“Mr. Vance,” Julian finally stammered, his voice cracking with desperate subordination. “I didn't know. If I had known who you were—if you had dressed like—”
“Like a billionaire?” Arthur finished softly, interrupting without malice. “That is the trap, Julian. You value the wrapping paper far more than the gift inside. Tell me, how many customers have you turned away this month based solely on their attire?”
Julian swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing sharply. “Just… a few. Standard loss prevention guidelines, sir. Corporate security seminars emphasize high-risk demographics.”
“Corporate security seminars taught by consultants who have never built a single thing with their own hands,” Arthur replied, his voice dropping an octave. “When I started this company in a drafty garage in Detroit, my hands were stained with grease, and my jacket looked exactly like this one. People laughed at me. People like you told me I couldn't afford my own dreams.”
Julian opened his mouth to apologize, but the heavy steel door of the basement stairs groaned open, and Evelyn marched back into the boutique. She looked pale, her eyes wide with a mixture of shock and reluctant obedience as she clutched the manila folder tightly against her chest. She walked straight past Julian, ignoring him completely, and stopped directly in front of Arthur.
“I read it, Mr. Vance,” Evelyn said, her voice barely above a whisper. “All of it. I found Clause 9.”
Arthur nodded slowly, a somber expression crossing his weathered features. “And?”
“It’s true,” Evelyn breathed, glancing sideways at Julian with genuine pity. “Every single word of it. He’s not who he applied to be.”
Julian’s eyes darted between them, sudden panic overriding his previous arrogance. “What are you talking about? I passed the background check! I have degrees from Wharton! My references are pristine!”
“Your degrees are real, Julian,” Arthur said, turning to face him squarely. “Your financial background is spotless. But your true employer is currently trying to mount a hostile takeover of my entire distribution network through a shell company.”

Julian staggered backward, colliding hard against the display case as the blood drained entirely from his face.
