Chapter 6 - The Federal Net

The heavy thud of boots echoed against the heavy glass double doors of the boutique as the override lock clicked open from the outside. Julian’s hand froze inside his suit jacket, his knuckles whitening against whatever contraband or burner device he had hidden within the lining. The tension in the room thickened until it felt almost solid, the air smelling faintly of ozone and impending doom.

Two federal agents in plain black tactical windbreakers stepped into the warmth of the store, their expressions stone-cold and entirely unreadable. They moved with practiced efficiency, flanking Julian before he could even blink, their heavy hands clamping down firmly on his shoulders with iron authority.

“Julian Vance—no relation, I presume,” the lead agent said dryly, flashing a metallic silver shield. “Step away from the counter and keep your hands where we can see them.”

Julian let out a sharp, ragged breath, his knees finally buckling under the crushing weight of reality. He allowed the agents to pull his arms behind his back, the metallic click of heavy steel handcuffs echoing sharply off the polished marble floor. All the slick arrogance that had defined his demeanor just moments earlier was entirely gone, replaced by a hollow, defeated stare fixed on the toes of his expensive Italian leather shoes.

“You can’t prove anything,” Julian muttered weakly, though the defiance in his voice sounded hollow even to his own ears. “I was just doing my job. This is corporate harassment!”

“Corporate espionage, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit industrial sabotage,” Arthur corrected quietly, pulling his old leather wallet back out of his canvas jacket pocket and sliding it safely into his back pocket. “The encrypted data packets you’ve been streaming to Meridian Holdings from your terminal upstairs contain proprietary algorithms valued in the tens of millions. The digital breadcrumbs lead straight back to your offshore accounts in the Caymans.”

Evelyn watched the arrest unfold with a mixture of vindication and lingering shock, adjusting her black blazer as she tried to steady her breathing. “So that’s why you kept asking for the quarterly ledger updates last week, Julian. You weren't auditing our sales; you were mapping our supply chain for a hostile buyout.”

Julian didn't answer. He kept his head down as the agents hoisted him upward, guiding him firmly toward the exit. As they passed the display case housing the multi-million-dollar luxury watch, Julian cast one final, lingering look at the platinum timepiece that had started his entire downfall.

“Take him out through the rear service alley,” Arthur instructed the agents calmly. “I prefer not to make a public spectacle of corporate treachery in my own lobby.”

The agents nodded once and steered the captive man toward the back hallway, the heavy fire door swinging shut behind them with a dull, echoing slam. The boutique fell instantly silent once more, leaving only Arthur, Evelyn, and the lingering ghost of betrayal hanging in the air.

Evelyn let out a long, shuddering sigh, running a hand over her neatly tied bun. “Mr. Vance… I had no idea he had infiltrated the corporate ladder so deeply. If you hadn't walked in here today—”

“He would have crippled our global distribution by Friday,” Arthur finished for her, walking slowly toward the front windows to watch the federal SUVs pull away from the curb. “Which is precisely why I never trust a resume until I've tested the person holding it.”

Evelyn nodded respectfully, but her expression suddenly shifted as her phone buzzed violently in her pocket, lighting up with a flashing alert from the corporate security mainframe upstairs.
