Chapter 5 - The Corporate Spy

The fragile silence of the boutique shattered completely as Julian’s facade of corporate confidence crumbled into absolute dust. He raised a trembling hand, trying to formulate a denial, but his lips merely trembled without sound. The sharp gleam of ambition in his eyes had been replaced by the hunted terror of a cornered animal.

“A shell company?” Julian finally managed to gasp out, his voice a pathetic squeak. “Mr. Vance, you’re—you’re losing your mind. That’s paranoid delusion. I’m a senior sales associate!”

“You were hired forty-five days ago,” Arthur stated calmly, stepping closer with a predatory patience that belied his elderly frame. “Right after our chief competitor, Meridian Holdings, failed to acquire our overseas shipping lanes through legal arbitration. They needed an insider planted in our flagship store—someone aggressive, someone arrogant enough to alienate casual walk-ins, yet observant enough to monitor my personal visits.”

Evelyn stepped forward, dropping the manila folder onto the counter. It popped open, spilling out a cascade of printed bank statements, encrypted email printouts, and a high-resolution photograph of Julian shaking hands with the CEO of Meridian Holdings in a private downtown steakhouse just three nights ago.

“You’re wearing a comms earbud right now, aren't you, Julian?” Evelyn asked sharply, her eyes narrowing as she spotted the faint, flesh-toned wire tucked tightly behind his right earlobe.

Julian instinctively reached up to touch his ear, a dead giveaway that sealed his fate instantly. The realization that he had been completely outplayed by an old man in a canvas jacket broke whatever restraint he had left. His professional demeanor vanished, replaced by a snarling desperation as he realized his career—and his freedom—were completely forfeit.

“You set me up,” Julian hissed, his voice dropping into a venomous register. “You knew I was there. You walked in here on purpose just to trap me!”

“I walk into all my stores unannounced, Julian,” Arthur replied coldly, his eyes flashing with sudden, intense steel. “You simply revealed your true character because you thought I was powerless.”

Julian’s hand dropped toward his inside jacket pocket, his fingers curling frantically around something hidden within his breast pocket. Evelyn shrieked, throwing her hands up to shield her face as she anticipated a weapon.

“Don't do it, son,” Arthur warned, not even flinching. “The federal marshals waiting outside the front glass have been watching your encrypted transmission feed for the last twenty minutes.”

Julian froze, his hand hovering inside his jacket. Through the thick glass of the storefront, the morning fog parted slightly to reveal three dark federal SUVs idling silently at the curb, their tinted windows reflecting the bleak morning light.
