Chapter 14 - The Final Ledger

Marcus lay sprawled across the Persian rug of the grand library, gasping for breath as soot and smoke smeared across his expensive charcoal-gray suit. His sleek hair was hopelessly disheveled, and his hands trembled against the marble floor as the distant wail of state police sirens finally echoed up the winding mountain road, growing louder and sharper with every passing second.

Arthur stepped over him calmly, walking back to the shattered desk where Evelyn was frantically salvaging the remaining physical ledgers from the scorched remains of the terminal.

“The physical backups are intact, Mr. Vance,” Evelyn reported, her voice steady despite the adrenaline still pumping through her veins. “The local drive wasn't connected to the network when the EMP went off. Every single patent, financial record, and corporate deed is completely secure.”

Arthur nodded slowly, sliding his worn leather wallet back into the pocket of his canvas work jacket. He turned his gaze down toward Marcus, who was slowly pushing himself up onto his hands and knees, glaring up with eyes filled with venomous defeat.

“You can lock me away, Arthur,” Marcus spat out, wiping a streak of black soot from his forehead. “You can hand all the evidence over to the feds. But you can't stop what’s coming. Meridian Holdings already has copies of your foundational R&D blueprints. The board will vote you out by the end of the week once they realize your era of leadership is officially dead.”

Arthur knelt down slowly, his joints popping slightly as he came eye-to-eye with the man who had betrayed him. His weathered face remained entirely calm, carrying the quiet dignity of a man who had built empires from the ground up while others merely watched from the sidelines.

“Meridian Holdings has copies of blueprints that were obsolete twenty years ago, Marcus,” Arthur said softly, his voice carrying an absolute, unshakeable authority. “I knew there was a mole in my inner circle six months ago. Every file you downloaded, every server you accessed, and every shell company you established was part of a controlled honeypot designed to flush out corporate thieves.”

Marcus froze, his breath catching in his throat as the horrifying magnitude of Arthur’s foresight finally dawned on him. “A… a honeypot?”

“From the very beginning,” Arthur confirmed quietly, standing back up as the heavy oak doors of the library burst open.

Half a dozen state troopers in tactical gear swarmed into the grand study, their flashlights cutting sharp beams through the lingering smoke as they immediately subdued Marcus and slapped heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists. The officers hoisted him to his feet, hauling him toward the exit without a single word of resistance.

Evelyn watched them lead Marcus away into the night, letting out a long, shuddering breath that finally released the crushing tension of the entire ordeal. She turned to Arthur, looking at the old man in his frayed canvas work jacket and faded blue jeans with a profound, reverent awe that words could never fully capture.

“Mr. Vance,” Evelyn whispered softly. “What do we do now?”
