Chapter 2 - The Falling Ledger

The silence inside the boutique became absolute, heavy enough to suffocate the ambient hum of the air conditioning. Julian blinked, his mouth remaining half-open in a frozen snarl, his brain struggling to process the impossible words that had just tumbled from his boss's mouth. He looked from Evelyn to Arthur, waiting for the punchline of a cruel joke that never arrived. Arthur simply sighed, a deep, weary sound that carried the weight of a thousand boardrooms, and slowly closed his worn leather wallet with a quiet snap.

“Evelyn,” Arthur said, his voice carrying an effortless authority that required no shouting to command absolute attention. “It seems your hiring process has slipped a fraction of a percent since our last quarterly audit.”

Evelyn rushed around the counter, nearly tripping over her own heels, and bowed her head in sheer panic. “Mr. Vance! I had no idea—the security guards called in sick, and we thought—”

“You thought a man in a canvas jacket couldn’t possibly appreciate fine craftsmanship,” Arthur interrupted gently, standing up with surprising agility for his age. His boots clicked sharply against the Italian marble, a sound that made Julian flinch. Arthur walked past the trembling clerk, pausing only to tap a single finger against the glass display case directly above the luxury wristwatch. “I designed this movement forty years ago, Julian. Every gear, every spring. It bears my initials on the inner rotor.”

Julian’s face turned the color of spoiled milk. He grabbed the edge of the mahogany counter to steady himself, his slicked-back hair suddenly looking ridiculous against his soaked forehead. “Mr. Vance… sir… I was only following store protocol regarding—regarding loitering and high-value security—”

“Protocol does not include blatant disrespect, young man,” Arthur said, turning to face him with eyes as sharp as cut glass. “Kindness is the ultimate luxury, and it appears you are entirely bankrupt.”

Evelyn wrung her hands together, terrified that her entire career was evaporating before her eyes. “Please, Arthur—Mr. Vance. Don't ruin him on his first month. We can handle this internally.”

Arthur reached into the pocket of his worn brown jacket and pulled out a heavy, vintage gold key, placing it gently on the glass counter right beside the luxury watch. The key bore a crimson velvet tag with a gold-embossed crest that made Evelyn gasp even louder than before.

“Handle it, Evelyn,” Arthur said quietly. “But before you do, open the vault in the basement. There is a file waiting for you that changes everything.”
