Chapter 8 - The Photograph in the Legal Briefcase

The faded photograph in the legal briefcase caught the amber glow of the string lights, revealing the image of a young girl with striking, familiar eyes. Sarah stared at the picture, her heart pounding against her ribs as the pieces of a hidden family history violently collided in her mind.
"Who is she?" Sarah whispered, her voice trembling as she reached out a shaking hand to touch the edge of the paper.
Mr. Henderson carefully adjusted his spectacles, his expression solemn. "Her name is Maya Vance. Or, legally speaking, Maya Hayes. Your father’s youngest daughter—your half-sister."
David staggered backward, gripping the edge of the patio chair for support. "A second daughter? Arthur never said a single word about another child. How is that even possible?"
"Elena Vance passed away shortly after Maya was born," Henderson explained, turning the page to reveal a series of adoption and guardianship records. "Arthur placed her with a private guardian in upstate New York to protect her from the intense public scrutiny surrounding his corporate IPO at the time. He funded her education and living expenses through a blind trust—the very same trust Clara attempted to raid tonight."
Clara let out a harsh, defeated laugh from her spot on the grass. "And now you know why I needed the money. The syndicate found out about Maya. They were going to use her as leverage to force Arthur into signing over the manufacturing plant's controlling shares."
Sarah spun around, her eyes blazing with fury. "So you decided to steal the trust fund first? You were working with them all along, Clara!"
"I was trying to buy us time!" Clara shouted back, tears finally overflowing down her cheeks. "You don't know what they’re capable of, Sarah. They don't just want money; they want total control of the regional infrastructure."
Detective Miller stepped forward, closing the briefcase and securing the clasps. "We can sort out the corporate conspiracy at the precinct, but right now, we have a bigger problem. If this syndicate knows about Maya Hayes, she could be in immediate danger."
Sarah’s breath caught. All the anger evaporated, replaced instantly by a fierce, protective instinct. "Where is she now?"
Henderson checked his watch, tapping a finger against the leather surface of the briefcase. "According to the last update in the file, Maya is currently a graduate student living in downtown Chicago, working late shifts at the university library."
Without hesitation, Sarah reached down, snatched her smartphone off the table—still displaying the ominous red warning screen—and hit the power button to reboot the system. The device flickered, struggled for a moment, and then booted back up to its home screen.
"Detective, I need a car to the nearest precinct," Sarah said firmly, her voice leaving no room for argument. "We need to issue a federal protective custody order for Maya right now."
Detective Miller nodded, reaching for his radio. "Copy that. I’ll call the Chicago field office immediately."
Just as the radio hissed to life with a dispatcher's voice, Sarah’s phone buzzed aggressively in her hand. A new text message popped up on the screen from an unknown international number.
She tapped the notification, and the color drained entirely from her face as she read the single line of text displayed across the glowing display.
