Chapter 14 - The Blade in the Red Glow

The cold steel of the blade pressed painfully against Sarah’s throat, drawing a single bead of crimson that trickled down her skin into the collar of her dark teal blouse. The emergency lights pulsed a rhythmic, blinding red, casting erratic shadows across Marcus’s twisted, desperate face.

"You're out of time, Marcus," Sarah choked out, her hands kept carefully away from her body to avoid slipping on the concrete floor. "The federal tactical units are already clearing the perimeter. You won't make it two blocks."

Marcus laughed, a frantic, unhinged sound that echoed off the damp concrete walls. "Let them try! Once this facility wipes, the syndicate clears every liability ledger on the continent. I’m walking out of here a very rich man—with or without you."

He pressed the blade slightly deeper, drawing a sharp hiss of breath from Sarah. "The flash drive, Sarah. Drop it now, or your sister joins the ruins."

Sarah’s eyes darted toward the digital keypad on the security door. The countdown timer on the screen flickered relentlessly.

With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Sarah didn't hand over the drive; instead, she slammed her heel down hard onto Marcus’s instep with all her weight.

Marcus roared in pain, his grip loosening just enough for Sarah to wrench herself free from his grasp, stumbling hard onto the gritty floor. As Marcus lunged forward to slash at her again, a deafening crack echoed through the cavernous room.
