Chapter 10 - The Master Key in the Open Palm

The silver master key gleamed under the flickering string lights, held steady in Elena’s manicured hand. The oppressive silence in the backyard was palpable, broken only by the faint, rhythmic hum of the distant highway.
Detective Miller's hand tightened instantly around his weapon, his eyes narrowed as he assessed the tactical threat. "Elena Vance, or whatever your alias is, you are under arrest for federal extortion, conspiracy, and corporate fraud. Drop the key and step away."
Elena didn't flinch. She simply tilted her head, a faint, condescending smile playing on her lips. "Arrest me, officer? And do what? Trigger the dead man's switch that locks down every financial institution tied to this county before midnight? Or perhaps you'd prefer to explain to the federal grand jury why Maya Hayes’s pulse monitor just stopped flatlining?"
Sarah stepped past the detective, her rage overriding her fear. She stopped just feet away from Elena, her dark eyes blazing with unyielding fury.
"Where is she, Elena?" Sarah demanded, her voice cutting through the damp evening air like a razor. "If you've touched a hair on my sister's head, I swear to God I will personally see to it that you spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security federal hole."
Elena chuckled, a dry, dismissive sound. "Such fierce loyalty for a sister you didn't even know existed twenty minutes ago. Your father was the exact same way—always trying to protect secrets that were too big to hold." Elena dangled the silver key slightly. "The flash drive, Sarah. Give it to me, and I’ll send the extraction code to the medical team holding Maya."
David stepped up beside Sarah, his face pale and lined with decades of hidden grief. "Elena... why? We built that company together from the ground up. Why turn it into a weapon of extortion?"
"Because power isn't given, David. It’s taken," Elena replied coldly. She glanced around the ruined birthday party, her gaze lingering briefly on young Lily, who was peeking out from the kitchen doorway in her light purple dress. "Arthur thought he could hide his daughter away in a ivory tower and play the benevolent patriarch. But empires require blood to maintain their foundations."
Sarah slowly reached into her pocket, retrieving the sealed evidence pouch containing the encrypted black flash drive Detective Miller had taken from Marcus. She held it up, letting Elena see it clearly.
"You want it?" Sarah asked, her voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Come and take it."
Before Elena could react, Sarah tossed the pouch not toward Elena, but high into the air toward the open kitchen doorway where young Lily stood watching.
"Lily! Catch!" Sarah shouted.
May you like
Lily’s hands shot up instinctively, her small fingers grabbing the pouch out of the air just as Elena lunged forward with terrifying speed, her hand closing on empty space where Sarah had been standing a split second before.
