Chapter 6 - The Red Screen Override

The bright red text blazed against the dark glass of Sarah’s smartphone, illuminating her pale face in the dim amber glow of the backyard string lights. The word OVERRIDE pulsed rhythmically, like a digital heartbeat counting down to an unknown catastrophe.

"What did you do?" Sarah demanded, stepping toward Marcus while keeping the phone gripped tightly in her hand.

Marcus laughed, a harsh, grating sound that made young Aiden bury his face deeper into David’s jacket. "I didn't do anything, Mrs. Hayes. That’s the beauty of decentralized automation. Once the sync hits a corrupted node, the system purges itself—and takes every financial record of your family's estate down into the digital abyss with it."

Detective Miller shoved Marcus roughly toward the open gate, signaling for backup units parked down the street to move in. "Save the villain monologue for the judge. Move."

As the officers hauled Marcus away into the waiting squad car, the heavy wooden gate swung shut with a hollow thud, leaving the remaining family members standing in an atmosphere thick with dread. Clara was still huddled on the grass, rocking slowly, completely broken by the cascading wreckage of her secret life.

Sarah stared at her phone as the screen began scrolling through lines of rapid, incomprehensible code. Files were vanishing in real-time. The digital folder labeled Hayes Estate Trust & Holdings dissolved into a cascade of random binary characters before disappearing entirely.

"It's gone," Sarah whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the overhead lights. "Ten years of my father’s legacy... wiped out in three seconds."

David slowly released Aiden, gently guiding the boy toward the house. "Go inside to the kitchen, Aiden. Have your aunt give you a glass of water. Everything is going to be fine."

Once the boy was safely inside, David walked slowly over to Sarah, his face lined with profound grief and exhaustion. He placed a heavy hand on her shoulder. "Sarah... is the trust account completely unrecoverable?"

Sarah shook her head, her eyes fixed on the dead screen of her phone. "The local backups were synced to the cloud terminal that Marcus just hijacked. Unless we have the physical master key—the hardware token my father kept in his private office safe—there is no way to authenticate the recovery with the bank."

Clara suddenly stopped rocking on the grass. She lifted her head, her eyes bloodshot and wild, a hysterical laugh bubbling up in her throat.

"You think the master key is in the office safe?" Clara wheezed, pushing herself up unsteadily on her bruised heels. "You're looking in the wrong place, Sarah. The old man didn't keep it at the house."

Sarah turned sharply, her eyes flashing with renewed fury. "Where is it, Clara? If you have one shred of decency left, you will tell me right now."

Clara smiled bitterly, wiping a streak of dirt from her cheek. "You'll find it locked inside the safety deposit box at the downtown branch... under a name you've never heard of before."

Sarah gripped her phone so hard her fingers ached. "Whose name?"

May you like

Clara leaned in close, her voice dropping to a harsh, mocking whisper. "Your father's second wife—the one he never told you existed."
