Chapter 13 - The Blast at the Depot

The deafening roar of the explosion shook the ground beneath the cruiser, sending a shockwave that rattled the windows and filled the air with billowing clouds of gray smoke and pulverized concrete.
Detective Miller threw the car door open, dropping into a tactical crouch with his weapon drawn. "Stay down, Sarah! I told you to stay in the car!"
Ignoring the command, Sarah pushed her own door open, ducking low as debris rained down across the asphalt. The massive steel loading doors of the abandoned railway terminal lay twisted and smoking twenty feet away from the gaping, fire-lit entrance.
Through the thick haze of smoke, shadowy figures could be seen moving erratically inside the vast, cavernous interior. A series of sharp, rhythmic cracks echoed from within—suppressed gunfire.
"Miller!" a voice barked through the tactical radio repeater in Sarah’s pocket. "This is Unit Three! We breached the rear perimeter, but the primary holding cell is rigged with a thermal tripwire! We can't get inside without the biometric override!"
Detective Miller keyed his mic, his voice sharp and urgent. "Hold your position! Do not cross the tripwire! We have the master drive on-site!"
Sarah sprinted toward the entrance, her boots crunching over shattered glass and twisted rebar. "Maya!" she shouted into the smoke-filled void. "Maya, can you hear me?!"
A faint, muffled voice answered from deep within the bowels of the rusted terminal structure. "Sarah...? Get... get out of here... it’s a trap!"
Without hesitation, Sarah plunged past the smoking threshold into the suffocating darkness of the depot, guided only by the dim emergency lighting flickering along the concrete pillars. The air tasted of sulfur and burning electrical wire.
As she rounded a massive concrete support beam, she came face-to-face with a heavy steel security door leading to the lower subterranean level. The digital keypad on the wall flashed a bright, angry red, ticking down a ten-second self-destruct sequence.
00:09... 00:08... 00:07...
Sarah pulled the black flash drive from her pocket, her hands trembling violently as she attempted to align the port with the emergency override slot beneath the keypad.
Suddenly, a heavy hand grabbed her shoulder from behind, spinning her around with brutal force and slamming her hard against the concrete pillar.
It wasn't an operative. It was Marcus, his wrists miraculously free of the zip-ties, a cold, jagged blade glinting in the dim red emergency light as he pressed it directly against her throat.

"End of the line, sweetheart," Marcus snarled, his eyes wild with desperate fury. "Hand over the drive, or I carve a new smile across your face before the countdown hits zero."
