Chapter 9 - The Point of No Return

The atmosphere inside the vast, decaying warehouse instantly crystallized into mortal peril. Officer Miller froze, his hand hovering uselessly over his empty holster as he stared back and forth between Marcus and Director Chen. The four tactical agents who had accompanied Chen into the building immediately raised their weapons, their submachine guns training directly on Marcus’s head.
“Agent Marcus, lower your weapon immediately!” one of the tactical agents barked, his finger tightening against the trigger guard.
Marcus didn't flinch. He kept his pistol steady, his eyes locked onto Director Chen’s face, which had rapidly transitioned from shock back to a chilling, calculated calm.
“You didn't come here to rescue me, Elena,” Marcus said, his voice dangerously low. “You came here to make sure Vance didn't talk during a formal tribunal. When he mentioned the glove box, he wasn't talking about a threat against me. He was talking about the kill switch.”
Director Chen slowly brushed a stray lock of hair behind her ear, a faint, cynical smile touching the corners of her lips. “Vance was always a liability. He grew sloppy, Marcus. He started keeping paper trails where there should only have been digital echoes. But you... you’re just as sloppy for falling into his trap.”
“Director Chen, what is going on?” Officer Miller cried out, his voice cracking with panic. “Are you telling me the whole agency is dirty?”
“The agency is self-sustaining, officer,” Chen replied smoothly, never breaking eye contact with Marcus. “Governments rise and fall. Budgets are cut, restructured, forgotten. To keep the lights on and the true threats neutralized, certain... private enterprises have to be funded through unconventional channels.”
“By selling illegal arms and trafficking contraband through local syndicates?” Marcus demanded. “That’s high treason.”
“That’s realpolitik,” Chen corrected sharply. “And unfortunately for you, Agent Marcus, you’ve seen the ledger, you’ve read the directive, and you’re standing in a condemned warehouse where an active shooter situation just went terribly wrong.”
Chen raised her hand slowly, signaling the tactical agents. “Execute the protocol.”

Before the agents could pull their triggers, Marcus dove sideways, smashing his shoulder against the glass window of the blue vintage truck just as a hail of gunfire chewed through the wooden pallets where he had been standing a second before. Shards of safety glass rained down inside the cab as Marcus kicked open the driver's side door and scrambled underneath the chassis of the vehicle.
