Chapter 12 - The State Highway Pursuit

The blue vintage pickup truck and the battered police cruiser tore down State Route 9 at eighty miles per hour, their engines whining against the relentless strain. The coastal wind whipped through Marcus’s shattered driver’s window, carrying the sharp scent of ozone and burning rubber. In his rearview mirror, Marcus saw two unmarked black SUVs pulling onto the highway a half-mile back, their high-beam headlights flashing through the afternoon glare.
“They’re gaining on us, Marcus!” Officer Miller’s voice crackled over the radio, laced with mounting panic. “Those SUVs are armored. My patrol car won't take another hit like the one in the warehouse!”
“Keep your foot down, Miller!” Marcus shouted back, gripping the steering wheel with scarred hands. “We only have eight miles left until we hit the state line checkpoint. Once we cross into state jurisdiction, federal operatives need a signed gubernatorial warrant to pursue us.”
“And what makes you think the governor won't just side with Chen?” Miller demanded, dodging a slower-moving semi-truck by swerving onto the hard shoulder. “Chen is a federal director. Governors love federal funding more than they love rogue agents!”
“Because the governor owes my father a debt he can never repay,” Marcus said quietly, his eyes fixed on the twisting asphalt ahead. “And my father’s records are the very files Vance was trying to burn.”
Suddenly, the sleek black SUVs rounded the bend at high speed, closing the distance to less than two hundred yards. The passenger-side window of the lead SUV rolled down, and a masked operative leaned out, leveling a heavy long-range kinetic rifle equipped with an explosive-tipped breaching round directly at the rear axle of Miller’s cruiser.
“Miller, look out! Hard right!” Marcus roared into the radio.
Miller jerked the steering wheel hard to the right just as a blinding flash of light erupted against the pavement where his car had been a split second before. The shockwave lifted the rear of the patrol cruiser off the ground, sending it spinning into a shallow grassy embankment, where it came to a violent halt against a thick wooden utility pole.

Marcus slammed on his brakes, spinning the blue vintage truck around in a wide arc across both lanes of traffic to shield the disabled cruiser from incoming fire. He threw the truck into park, ripped his side door open, and sprinted toward the smoking wreck of the police cruiser.
