Chapter 13 - The Wreckage and the USB

Marcus sprinted across the asphalt, the hot wind stinging his eyes, and threw open the passenger-side door of the wrecked police cruiser. Inside, Officer Miller slumped forward against the steering wheel, a deep gash bleeding freely across his forehead, his breathing shallow and erratic.

“Miller! Can you hear me?” Marcus shouted, unbuckling the officer’s jammed seatbelt and hauling him out of the smoking vehicle just as the front hood of the cruiser hissed and burst into a sheet of orange flame.

Miller coughed violently, clutching his ribs as Marcus dragged him behind the heavy steel frame of the vintage pickup truck. “My leg... I think it’s pinned or broken,” Miller groaned, his face pale with shock.

“You’re alive, that’s all that matters,” Marcus said, pulling a heavy combat trauma kit from the back floorboards of the truck and slapping a pressure bandage onto Miller’s bleeding forehead.

Behind them, the two unmarked black SUVs screeched to a halt, blocking both lanes of the highway. The doors flew open, and four tactical agents stepped out with their weapons raised, moving in a practiced, methodical tactical wedge toward the stalled vintage truck.

“End of the line, Marcus!” the lead agent shouted over a megaphone, his voice echoing coldly across the empty highway. “Step away from the vehicle and put your hands behind your head!”

Marcus ignored the megaphone. He reached into his tactical vest, pulled out the secure encrypted USB drive containing the full financial ledger of Director Chen’s syndicate, and tucked it deeply inside the inner lining of Miller’s heavy police jacket.

“What are you doing?” Miller whispered weakly, clutching at Marcus’s sleeve. “You can’t fight them all.”

“I’m not going to fight them,” Marcus said calmly, standing up slowly with his hands raised empty into the air. “I’m going to let them take me. But they won't get what they came for.”

“Marcus, no—” Miller started to protest, but Marcus stepped out from behind the truck, putting himself squarely in the crosshairs of the approaching tactical squad.

The lead agent lowered his rifle barrel slightly, signaling his men to hold their fire as they swarmed forward, grabbing Marcus’s arms and forcing him violently to his knees against the scorching asphalt. Heavy steel handcuffs bit into his wrists for the second time that day.

“Where is the hard drive, Marcus?” a familiar, cold voice demanded.

Director Elena Chen stepped out from the rear of the lead SUV, her trench coat immaculate, her expression a mask of pure triumph as she looked down at him in the dust.
