Chapter 8 - The Glove Box Secret

The heavy sliding doors of Warehouse B remained wide open, letting in the cool ocean breeze to sweep away the lingering scent of ozone and burnt fuel. Director Elena Chen stood beside the blue vintage pickup truck, watching as Captain Vance was led away in handcuffs toward a waiting transport van outside. The two operatives who had guarded him were already secured in separate vehicles.

Marcus walked slowly over to the passenger side of the vintage truck, his hand resting on the weathered chrome door handle. The warning from Vance echoed in the back of his mind: Open the glove box of that truck, Marcus. See what I left you.

Officer Miller descended from the catwalk, walking over to join Marcus and Director Chen, wiping his sweaty palms on his uniform trousers.

“Is it over?” Miller asked cautiously, looking around the cavernous, half-empty warehouse.

“For Vance, yes,” Director Chen replied, turning her sharp gaze toward Marcus. “Agent Marcus, good work maintaining cover. We’ve been trying to pin down Vance’s financial network for six months. This ledger inside the truck’s hard drive gives us every signature we need.”

Marcus didn't acknowledge her praise immediately. He pulled the small key from his pocket, inserted it into the glove box lock, and turned it with a soft click. The compartment door dropped open smoothly, revealing a stack of old insurance papers, a flashlight, and a plain manila envelope stamped with a red classification stamp that read EYES ONLY: MARCUS.

“What is that?” Director Chen asked, stepping closer.

Marcus reached inside, pulled out the heavy envelope, and slid the string fastener open. Inside was a single 8x10 glossy photograph and a handwritten note on Department of Justice letterhead. As Marcus’s eyes scanned the first two lines of the letter, the blood drained entirely from his face, mirroring the shock he had felt earlier in the driveway.

“Marcus?” Miller asked, noticing the stark change in his demeanor. “What’s in the envelope?”

Marcus handed the note to Director Chen without a word. Chen read the first sentence aloud, her professional composure instantly shattering into visible disbelief.

“If you are reading this, Vance didn't burn the truck, which means the Director’s office already knew about the syndicate... and helped build it.”

Chen dropped the paper as if it were burning her fingers, her eyes darting toward the open warehouse doors where the transport van was just pulling away.

“That’s impossible,” Chen whispered, her voice trembling. “Vance acted alone.”

“Did he?” Marcus said coldly, pulling his service weapon and leveling it directly at Director Chen’s chest.
