Chapter 11 - The Warehouse Breakout

The massive V8 engine of the blue vintage pickup roared to life, filling the confined space of Warehouse B with thick exhaust fumes and deafening noise. The sudden, violent vibration of the chassis startled the tactical agent kneeling beside the vehicle, causing his rifle to discharge harmlessly into the concrete floor, sending a shower of sparks into the air.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He slammed his heels against the concrete, pushing himself backward out from under the chassis just as the truck’s heavy rear differential lurched forward. He scrambled to his feet, threw open the driver's side door, and hauled himself into the cab, slamming the door shut.

Director Chen screamed in fury from across the warehouse floor. “Shoot out the tires! Don't let him move that truck!”

A barrage of heavy-caliber rounds slammed into the side panels of the vintage vehicle, riddling the doors with jagged holes and shattering the remaining side windows. Shards of glass rained down inside the cab, cutting shallow lines across Marcus’s face, but the thick steel body of the classic truck absorbed the impact, protecting the engine block and the driver’s compartment.

Marcus slammed the gearshift into low range, stepping hard on the accelerator. The rear tires spun furiously against the oil-stained concrete, smoking heavily before catching traction with a violent lurch. The blue pickup shot forward, heading straight toward the massive, half-open corrugated metal doors of the warehouse.

“Open fire! Full auto!” Chen commanded.

The tactical squad unleashed a relentless wall of lead, but the heavy steel nose of the vintage truck smashed directly into the metal sliding doors with a thunderous crunch. The rusted tracks gave way instantly, twisting like foil as the truck burst out of the dimly lit warehouse and into the blinding afternoon sunlight.

Officer Miller, who had managed to scramble into his patrol cruiser parked nearby, hit his sirens and accelerated hard, pulling in directly behind the fleeing pickup truck to provide a rolling blockade against any pursuing vehicles.

Marcus checked his rearview mirror through the shattered glass. Director Chen stood in the gaping doorway of the warehouse, her trench coat billowing in the wind, lowering her smoking pistol as she watched them escape into the coastal highway grid.

“Marcus!” Miller’s voice crackled over the secure radio channel in the truck’s dash. “That was insane! Where do we go now? Every federal building in the tri-state area is going to be locked down against us!”

“We don't go to a federal building,” Marcus replied into his handset, wiping blood from his cheek. “We go to the one place Chen can't touch us without starting a constitutional crisis: the state governor’s private residence.”
