Chapter 7 - The Trap Closes

Captain Vance’s hand emerged from his jacket holding a sleek, custom-engraved Beretta. He didn't hesitate; he raised the barrel and aimed it squarely at Marcus’s chest. The two operatives quickly recovered from the falling steel drums, flanking Vance and cutting off Marcus’s only clear path back toward the exit ladder.
From his hiding spot on the elevated catwalk above, Officer Miller raised his service weapon, sighting down the barrel directly at Vance’s shoulder. His finger hovered over the trigger, trembling violently. He knew that firing meant crossing a line with no return, but letting Marcus die meant becoming an accomplice to murder.
“Drop the weapon, Captain!” Miller shouted, stepping out onto the edge of the catwalk and revealing his position to everyone below.
Vance didn't even flinch. He glanced up at Miller with a patronizing smirk, his grip on the Beretta steady as a rock. “Well, look what the stray cat dragged in. A local patrol cop playing hero. Put the piece down, officer, before you ruin what’s left of your miserable little pension.”
“Don't listen to him, Miller!” Marcus called out, keeping his eyes locked on Vance. “He’s got nowhere to run. The perimeter outside is already locked down by federal perimeter units.”
Vance’s expression flickered for a fraction of a second at the mention of federal perimeter units, but he quickly recovered his composure. “You’re bluffing, Marcus. If there were perimeter units, my comms would be dead. The airwaves are completely clean.”
“That’s because I jammed them before we climbed onto the roof,” a calm, authoritative voice echoed from the shadowed main entrance of the warehouse.
The heavy sliding metal doors slowly creaked open, admitting a flood of harsh daylight. Silhouetted against the bright glare stood a tall woman in a crisp federal trench coat, flanked by four heavily armed tactical agents wearing full body armor and carrying submachine guns.
Vance’s jaw tightened. He lowered his gun an inch, turning his head toward the entrance. “Director Chen. I wasn't expecting internal affairs to handle a routine impound.”
Director Elena Chen stepped forward into the warehouse, her boots clicking sharply against the concrete floor. Her face was an unreadable mask of absolute authority. “It stopped being a routine impound the moment you hijacked a classified federal relay vehicle, Captain Vance.”
Marcus let out a slow, steady breath, watching as the tactical agents fanned out and forced Vance’s two operatives to drop their weapons onto the floor.
Vance slowly lowered his Beretta, tossing it onto the hood of the blue vintage truck with a metallic clatter. “You’re making a massive mistake, Elena. This entire operation was authorized under directive—"
“Save the paperwork for the tribunal,” Chen interrupted coldly, nodding to the agents. “Take him into custody.”
As two tactical agents moved in to snap heavy steel zip-ties around Vance’s wrists, the disgraced captain shot one final, venomous glare directly at Marcus.

“You think this is the end of it?” Vance sneered as he was hauled away. “Open the glove box of that truck, Marcus. See what I left you.”
