Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

Director Elena Chen stood over Marcus as he knelt on the hot asphalt, the cool ocean breeze doing nothing to temper the intense friction of the standoff. The four tactical agents held their weapons trained tightly on him, while another two agents aggressively searched the interior of the blue vintage pickup truck, ripping out seats and smashing the dashboard display in a frantic search for the missing data.
“Where is it, Marcus?” Chen repeated, her voice dripping with dangerous condescension. “You can’t eat it, you can’t hide it in the clouds, and you certainly can’t take it to the governor now.”
Marcus looked up, a faint, bloodied smile touching his lips. “You spent twenty years building an off-the-books empire, Chen, and you still don't understand the oldest rule in intelligence work.”
Chen’s eyes narrowed sharply. She gestured to the agent searching the truck. “Did you find the drive?”
The agent stepped out of the passenger door, shaking his head grimly. “Negative, Director. The dash is completely clean. The hard drive housing was ripped out during the warehouse exit. It’s gone.”
Chen turned her fierce gaze back down to Marcus, her composure slipping for a fraction of a second as panic threatened to pierce her armor. “You gave it to the local cop. You planted it on him while you dragged him out of the cruiser.”
Marcus remained silent, his posture completely rigid despite the agony in his wrists.
Across the highway, behind the twisted metal frame of the burning police cruiser, Officer Miller lay flat on his back in the tall grass, completely hidden from the direct line of sight of the tactical squad. His hand trembled inside his heavy police jacket as his fingers curled tightly around the small, metallic USB drive Marcus had slipped inside his lining. Sirens—faint at first, but growing rapidly louder—began to wail in the distance from the direction of the state capital.
“Director Chen!” one of the tactical spotters shouted, pointing down the highway toward the northern horizon. “State police troopers! Three units, moving fast! They’re crossing the state line checkpoint!”
Chen’s face went pale. State troopers meant jurisdiction shift. It meant gubernatorial oversight. It meant the end of her clandestine operation in broad daylight.
“Grab him!” Chen snarled to her agents, abandoning her composure entirely. “Throw him in the back of the SUV. We’re taking him off the grid permanently.”

The agents hauled Marcus to his feet roughly, shoving him toward the open door of the black SUV. But before they could slam the door shut, the wailing sirens crescendoed into a deafening roar, and three state highway patrol cruisers screeched to a halt across the highway, their red and blue emergency lights flashing brilliantly against the afternoon sky.
