Chapter 9 - The Confession on Tape

The glowing monitors behind Marcus flickered, instantly switching from financial charts to a high-definition video feed of Arthur sitting in his private office downtown.

"You see, Julianna, Arthur was never the mastermind; he was just the pretty face we put in front of the board while I managed the real capital," Marcus explained, leaning back and crossing his legs.

"Why are you telling me this now, Marcus? What is your endgame?" she demanded, stepping closer to the desk while the federal agent kept his weapon trained on Marcus's chest.

"Because the federal net is closing in on both of us, and Arthur decided he wanted to cut me out of the final liquidation by framing you for the whole operation," Marcus said, his smile fading into a mask of bitter resentment.

"If you want to survive what's coming, we need to merge our assets and upload the master decryption key to the Department of Justice before Arthur wipes the servers," Marcus continued, pointing a trembling finger toward a red thumb drive resting on the console.

Julianna looked at the red thumb drive, knowing that trusting Marcus was essentially suicide, but realizing it was the only way to prove her absolute innocence to the federal task force. She reached out her hand, her fingers hovering just an inch above the plastic casing of the drive when the entire warehouse plunged into absolute darkness. The humming servers died instantly, plunging the room into a suffocating silence that was broken only by the sharp click of a heavy metal door slamming shut at the far end of the building.

"Someone just cut the main transformer outside, we've been locked in," the federal agent shouted, spinning around toward the dark doorway with his flashlight beam cutting through the gloom.

A sharp crack echoed through the cavernous space—a silenced gunshot that shattered the glass partition directly above Marcus's head, sending a shower of sharp fragments across the floor. Marcus slumped forward onto the desk without a sound, a dark red stain spreading rapidly across the back of his silk shirt as the smell of cordite filled the air.

"Get down!" the federal agent yelled, grabbing Julianna by the arm and dragging her behind the heavy steel frame of a server rack as more shots ricocheted off the metal casing.

In the brief flash of muzzle fire coming from the upper catwalk, Julianna saw a familiar silhouette standing in the shadows—Arthur, holding a suppressed pistol with terrifying calm.

"Arthur is up on the catwalk, he's trying to eliminate the last witness to his offshore empire," she whispered into the agent's ear, her heart pounding frantically against her ribs.
