Chapter 11 - The Ultimate Betrayal

"You always were entirely too smart for your own good, Julianna, which is why I should have had you locked away in a sanatorium years ago," Arthur said, stopping just three feet away from her with the heavy steel pipe resting lazily against his thigh.
"Instead, you married me because my family's political connections were the only way you could secure your initial seed capital for the firm," she replied, her eyes never leaving his cold, calculating gaze.
"Business is business, darling, and sentimentality is a tax write-off we simply couldn't afford," Arthur retorted, his grip tightening on the metal bar as he prepared to swing.
Julianna didn't wait for the blow; she pulled the red thumb drive from her pocket and hurled it directly into the open cooling fan of the nearest server rack, where it was instantly pulverized into plastic shrapnel.
Arthur's face contorted into a mask of pure rage as he lunged forward, swinging the pipe with lethal force toward her head. She ducked instinctively, the heavy metal whistling through the air just inches above her scalp before crashing into the server casing with a deafening screech of rending metal. Sparks showered down around them as the server short-circuited, plunging the warehouse back into darkness as the emergency generator failed completely. In the pitch blackness, the sound of heavy sirens wailed outside the building, growing louder by the second as a dozen police cruisers converged on the perimeter.
"You destroyed the master key, Julianna! Do you have any idea what you've done?" Arthur screamed in the dark, his voice cracking with sheer panic as the sound of boots echoed from the front entrance.
"I didn't destroy the key, Arthur, I uploaded it to every federal terminal in the tri-state area the moment we walked into this room," a calm voice echoed from the doorway.
The emergency floodlights of the police cruisers outside suddenly blazed through the broken windows, illuminating the entire warehouse in a blinding white glare. Standing at the front entrance wasn't the federal agent who had accompanied her, but Marcus Vance—alive, bruised, and flanked by two heavily armed federal marshals.
Arthur froze, dropping the steel pipe to the concrete floor with a heavy metallic clatter as the marshals moved in with zip-ties drawn.

"It's over, Artie; the house of cards finally collapsed," Marcus said, walking slowly toward them as the federal agents slapped the cuffs on Arthur's wrists.
