Chapter 12 - The Reckoning

The morning sun broke over the Manhattan skyline, casting a warm golden glow across the polished glass facade of the federal courthouse downtown.
Julianna stood on the wide stone steps, wearing a fresh dark blazer and silk top, watching the media circus unfold around the base of the stairs as reporters shouted over one another.
"Mrs. Sterling, is it true your husband used your identity to launder thirty million dollars through offshore accounts?" a reporter yelled, shoving a microphone toward her face.
"No comment at this time, gentlemen, my legal team will release a full statement once the grand jury indictments are unsealed this afternoon," Julianna replied calmly, walking past the wall of cameras with her head held high.
She stepped into the quiet sanctuary of the courthouse lobby, where Marcus Vance was waiting for her near the mahogany reception desk with two cups of black coffee.
"The prosecutors are offering Arthur thirty years with no parole if he pleads guilty to the wire fraud charges, which means he'll spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary," Marcus said, handing her a paper cup.
"And what about your immunity deal, Marcus? Did the DOJ forget about your little venture in the Caymans?" she asked, taking a sip of the hot coffee.
"My immunity is contingent upon full cooperation, Julianna, which includes handing over the remaining assets to the victims' relief fund—starting with your brownstone," Marcus replied, offering a weary, apologetic smile.
Julianna looked out the tall arched windows of the lobby toward the river, feeling a profound sense of closure washing over her weary soul after months of deception and fear. She knew the Sterling name was permanently ruined, and her twenty-year marriage was nothing more than a cautionary tale of corporate greed, but she was finally free. She reached into her pocket and pulled out her wedding ring, the heavy platinum band catching the morning light one last time before she dropped it into a nearby brass wastebasket. Marcus watched the ring fall without saying a word, tipping his coffee cup in a silent toast to the end of an era.
"What will you do now, Julianna? You can't stay in New York after all of this," Marcus asked, turning to face her as the courtroom doors swung open.

"I'm catching a flight to Zurich this afternoon, Marcus, to close the last account Arthur forgot existed," she whispered, turning on her heel and walking toward the exit.
