Chapter 4 - The Midnight Courier

The rain was lashing against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the restaurant lobby as Julianna stepped out into the damp Manhattan night, the heavy leather folio clutched tightly against her chest.
A black town car idled at the curb, its hazard lights blinking rhythmically through the gray mist as the rear door swung open automatically.
"Get in, Mrs. Sterling, Mr. Vance is waiting for you at the safe house before the municipal servers lock down for the weekend," the driver said in a flat, gravelly voice through the gap in the partition.
Julianna slid into the plush leather interior, slamming the heavy door shut behind her as the vehicle surged forward into the gridlock of Fifth Avenue.
"Did Arthur try to follow us from the restaurant?" she asked, unbuttoning her dark blazer to let the cool conditioned air hit her flushed skin.
"Negative, ma'am, our surveillance unit reports he went out the service exit and is currently heading toward the marina on East River Drive," the driver replied, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror.
Julianna opened the leather folio and began examining the dense financial spreadsheets Arthur had just surrendered under duress, her eyes scanning the columns of overseas account numbers. Something was deeply wrong; the numbers didn't add up to mere corporate embezzlement or pension fund skimming. The scale of the capital transfers pointed to something far larger—an international arms brokering ring operating under the guise of maritime logistics and philanthropic shell corporations. Her phone buzzed violently against the leather seat, the screen illuminating her face with a harsh blue glow displaying an incoming call from an unknown, encrypted VoIP number.
"Answer it on speaker, let's see how quickly our dear Arthur realizes he just handed over his own firing squad," the driver said, his voice morphing slightly through a digital modulator.
Julianna stared at the blinking screen for three agonizing seconds before swiping her thumb across the glass and pressing it to her ear.
"If this is about the offshore accounts, Julianna, you need to look at page twelve of the addendum I left at the bottom of the folio," Arthur's voice crackled through the speaker, sounding strangely calm and devoid of panic.
"There is no page twelve, Arthur, I have the complete file right here in my hands," she snapped back, leaning forward as the car took a sharp turn onto the FDR Drive.

"That's because page twelve was never in the binder, Julianna," Arthur laughed softly on the other end, a chilling sound that cut straight through the hum of the engine. "It's currently taped to the inside of your apartment door, along with a federal search warrant for harboring a fugitive."
