Chapter 3 - The Recorder's Hum

The tiny magnetic tape began to spin with a faint, rhythmic whir that was nearly swallowed by the ambient jazz playing overhead.

Arthur’s eyes dropped instantly to the silver device resting beside the untouched bread basket, the color draining from his meticulously tanned face in a fraction of a second.

"Turn that off, Julianna, this is a private conversation and recording me without consent in the State of New York is a Class E felony," he said, lunging forward with a speed that shattered his carefully constructed facade of aristocratic calm.

"Relax, darling, the audio feed is currently streaming live to a secure cloud server managed by my brother's former law partner, Marcus Vance," she said, sliding the recorder an inch closer to her wine glass.

Arthur's hand stopped mid-air, hovering just inches from the small machine as his chest heaved with sudden, ragged breaths.

"Marcus Vance died in a boating accident off Montauk three years ago, Julianna, and you know it as well as I do," Arthur spat out, though a bead of sweat now traced a slow path down his temple.

"People have a habit of faking their deaths when their business partners start embezzling pension funds, Arthur, and Marcus was always exceptionally good at maritime navigation," she replied, her lips curving into a tight, humorless smile.

The silence that followed was broken only by the distant clatter of silverware and the murmur of neighboring diners enjoying their Friday evening. Arthur slowly pulled his hand back, settling back into his leather chair while his mind raced through a dozen contingency plans, none of which accounted for a resurrected adversary. He realized too late that the divorce papers weren't an offensive strike to rid himself of a liability; they were a meticulously baited trap designed to force him to incriminate himself on public record.

"What do you want, Julianna?" he asked, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper that lacked all of its previous authority.

"I want the brownstone, I want the operating shares of the firm, and most importantly, I want every single document related to the Pacific Rim acquisitions handed over by midnight," she stated calmly.

Arthur stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, recognizing the absolute resolve in her gaze before reaching slowly into his breast pocket to retrieve his Montblanc pen.

"You are playing a very dangerous game with people who don't negotiate, Julianna," he murmured, flipping the divorce agreement back to the signature page.

"I learned from the absolute best," she replied, watching as he signed his own name in blood-red ink.
