Chapter 1 - The Weight of Ink

"You can't honestly expect me to sign this garbage without a single word of explanation, Arthur," Julianna said, her voice dropping an octave as she leaned forward, the white linen napkin trembling slightly in her manicured hand.
"It is all right there in black and white, Julianna; twenty years of meticulous asset division do not require a romantic postscript," Arthur replied, his dark suit absorbing the ambient candlelight of the upscale Manhattan steakhouse while his jaw tightened imperceptibly.
"Meticulous? You call stripping me of the Beacon Hill brownstone and freezing our joint philanthropic accounts meticulous, or is this your coward's way of funding your little pharmaceutical sideline?" she snapped, her eyes narrowing as she tapped a fingernail against the leather binder.
"Keep your voice down, unless you want the entire dining room to know that your lifestyle was funded by my risk management firm's compliance blind spots," Arthur hissed back, the air between them growing ice-cold as he crossed his arms over his chest.
"You arrogant bastard, you think you can discard me like a worn-out briefcase after I built your entire political network from scratch?" she hissed, her chest rising and falling beneath her dark silk top in a rapid, controlled rhythm.
"We both know the foundation of this marriage was built on mutual convenience, Julianna, so spare me the tragic heroine monologue and just initial page four," Arthur said, sliding a gold-nibbed pen across the polished mahogany surface toward her plate.

Julianna looked at the pen, then up at Arthur's unblinking eyes, feeling a cold knot twist in her stomach that had nothing to do with grief and everything to do with survival. She reached out, her fingers brushing the cool metal of the pen, knowing that signing meant surrendering everything, but refusing meant stepping into a courtroom battle he had clearly spent two years planning. She picked up the heavy document, flipped past the financial disclosures, and froze when she saw a handwritten codicil tucked into the back pocket—a codicil bearing her signature from a trust fund she had never authorized.
