Chapter 6 - The Zurich Key

The interrogation room at the precinct was smelling of stale coffee and damp wool, the harsh fluorescent overhead light casting a sickly green hue over Julianna's handcuffed wrists.
A tired-looking federal agent with thinning gray hair and a rumpled suit dropped a heavy manila folder onto the metal table with a dull thud.
"Mrs. Sterling, your husband's legal team has provided us with a comprehensive digital ledger tracing three million dollars of missing corporate pension funds directly to a numbered Swiss account under your maiden name," the agent said, leaning against the doorframe with his arms crossed.
"Arthur has been systematically embezzling from the firm's retirement accounts for the past seven years using my defunct corporate identity, and those documents in your hand are the proof I pulled from his safe tonight," she replied, her voice steady despite the exhaustion creeping into her bones.
"That's a very neat story, but unfortunately for you, the digital signature on the bank transfers was authenticated by a biometric retina scan originating from your iPad Pro," the agent countered, sliding a printed verification sheet across the table.
Julianna stared at the biometric log, her mind racing as she calculated the exact date and time of the scan—it had occurred during her routine eye surgery recovery when Arthur had insisted on administering her post-operative antibiotic eye drops. He had literally used her helpless state to map her retinas and authorize the illegal transfers, turning her own body into the weapon of her own destruction. She looked up at the federal agent, realizing that conventional legal channels were completely closed to her because Arthur had purchased every compliance officer within a fifty-mile radius.
"If you check the metadata on that retina scan, you'll find it was routed through a proxy server located in the Cayman Islands under Arthur's personal IP address," she said, leaning forward until her nose was inches from the metal table.
"We already checked it, Mrs. Sterling, and the server belongs to a shell company registered to Marcus Vance—your deceased brother's former business partner," the agent said, his expression softening into one of genuine pity.
Julianna went completely rigid, the blood rushing in her ears as the name she thought she had buried three years ago resurfaced with terrifying implications. Marcus Vance wasn't hiding on a boat; he was working directly with Arthur, or worse—Marcus had been Arthur's silent partner all along, playing a long game to destroy the Sterling dynasty from within.
"Marcus isn't dead," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the fluorescent ballast above them.
"Excuse me?" the agent asked, leaning down closer to catch her words.
"Marcus Vance is sitting in the black sedan that dropped me off at my brownstone tonight, and if you don't dispatch a unit to intercept him right now, every federal witness in this district will be dead before sunrise," she said, her eyes flashing with a desperate, wild intensity.
The agent stared at her for a long, silent second, then his radio crackled to life with a frantic dispatch call from the East River Marina.

"Unit Four, we have a code red at pier forty-two, a body has just been pulled from the water wearing an expensive dark suit and carrying a leather briefcase," the radio squawked.
