Chapter 13 - The Zurich Terminal

The Zurich airport was quiet and sterile, the hum of international travelers blending with the soft chime of flight departure announcements echoing through the terminal.

Julianna stepped off the glass elevator on the subterranean level of the Swiss Federal Bank, her heavy leather folio tucked securely under her arm.

"Good afternoon, Mrs. Sterling, we have been expecting you," a tall, impeccably dressed bank director said, bowing slightly as he opened the reinforced security door to the vault.

She walked into the private viewing room, where a single metal safety deposit box rested on a velvet-lined table beneath a harsh brass desk lamp. The director inserted his master key alongside the digital code she provided, and the heavy steel lid popped open with a satisfying mechanical hiss. Inside the box lay a single manila envelope sealed with red wax bearing her grandfather's family crest—the very crest Arthur had spent twenty years trying to erase from the corporate registry. She broke the wax seal with her thumb and pulled out a stack of handwritten documents detailing the original patents for the pharmaceutical firm Arthur had stolen at the start of their marriage.

"Everything is intact, madam, exactly as your grandfather deposited it forty years ago," the bank director said politely, stepping back to give her privacy.

Julianna stared at the yellowed paper, realizing that these patents were worth hundreds of millions of dollars in modern licensing fees—enough to rebuild her life entirely from scratch. She slid the documents back into the envelope, picked up her folio, and turned toward the exit when her phone buzzed with an international notification. It was an encrypted text message from an unknown number in New York, containing a single scanned photograph of her former brownstone ablaze in the night.

"Your house was torched twenty minutes ago, Julianna, and the fire department found a body in the master bedroom wearing your wedding ring," the text read, its chilling words glowing against the dark screen.

Julianna stopped dead in her tracks, her breath catching in her throat as she realized the game wasn't over yet and Arthur had one final card to play from his prison cell.
