Chapter 8 - The Queens Warehouse

The abandoned industrial warehouse loomed like a concrete monolith against the pre-dawn sky, its broken windows staring out over the dark waters of Newtown Creek like sightless eyes.
The federal sedan crept down the unpaved access road with its headlights off, relying only on the pale glow of the fading moon to navigate the rubble-strewn lot.
"According to the GPS coordinates on that paper scrap, this is where Arthur's secondary offshore server is housed," the driver whispered, cutting the engine as they rolled to a stop behind a rusted shipping container.
Julianna pushed the passenger door open, stepping carefully over shards of shattered glass and weeds that poked up through the cracked asphalt.
"If Arthur finds out we're here before the warrant goes through, we won't live to see the sunrise," the federal agent warned, unholstering his firearm and flicking on the tactical flashlight.
They moved toward a rusted side door that stood slightly ajar, a faint hum of heavy-duty computer servers vibrating through the cold steel frame. Inside, the cavernous space was illuminated only by the rhythmic blinking blue and green lights of a massive server rack occupying the center of the room. Julianna walked slowly between the humming towers of technology, her eyes scanning the tangled web of Ethernet cables leading toward a makeshift office partition in the back. As they approached the glass-walled office, the silhouette of a man sitting in a leather executive chair came into view through the frosted panes.
"Arthur?" Julianna called out, her voice echoing strangely against the concrete walls of the warehouse.
The figure in the chair didn't turn around, continuing to stare silently at a wall-mounted monitor displaying a live global financial transaction map. The federal agent pushed the glass door open with the barrel of his gun, stepping into the office and shining his light directly into the face of the seated man. It wasn't Arthur at all; it was Marcus Vance, looking older and gaunter than he had three years ago, with a thin scar running down the left side of his neck. Marcus slowly turned around in the chair, a slow, knowing smile spreading across his pale lips as he looked directly at Julianna.
"Welcome to the party, Julianna, I've been waiting for you to catch up for nearly twenty years," Marcus said, his voice raspy and dry as dust.
"You're supposed to be dead, Marcus, the Coast Guard found your burning yacht off Montauk with your dental records inside," she said, taking a step backward in disbelief.

"When you want to disappear from a federal indictment, burning a corpse with dental implants is remarkably easy if you have a compliant medical examiner on your payroll—someone like Arthur Sterling," Marcus laughed softly, tapping a key on his keyboard.
