Chapter 9 - The Trojan Wire

The glowing numbers on the laptop screen flashed green as the five million dollar wire transfer was successfully processed through the gateway. In the center of the cavernous warehouse, the sharp, pungent hiss of natural gas continued to fill the damp air, growing louder with every passing second.

"Elena, what did you just do?" Agent Miller demanded, stepping closer to her as he holstered his weapon and pulled a protective respirator mask from his tactical belt. "You just gave them the exact ransom they asked for! That money is untraceable once it hits the offshore routing node!"

"It was never about the money, Agent Miller," Elena replied evenly, slipping her smartphone back into the pocket of her Kevlar vest and pulling down her own transparent safety visor. "It was about getting her to open a direct, unencrypted handshake protocol with my firm's central server."

Miller frowned, his eyes narrowing behind his respirator. "A handshake protocol?"

"The moment Chloe’s automated system accepted the wire transfer, her proprietary server had to authenticate the incoming routing certificate," Elena explained, her fingers flying across the laptop trackpad as she bypassed the local system limits and initiated a remote terminal override. "Which means her firewall dropped its perimeter defense for exactly four hundred milliseconds. Long enough for my automated malware payload to crawl right back down her connection pipeline."

A loud metallic clank echoed from the northern wall as the tactical operators finally managed to pry open the jammed breaker panel with a hydraulic crowbar. Sparks showered down onto the concrete floor as they violently yanked the main electrical lever downward, cutting the building's power supply and instantly silencing the hissing gas valves.

The heavy smell of gas lingered in the air, but the immediate threat of explosion dissipated as the ventilation fans kicked into emergency backup mode.

"Power is cut! Air quality stabilizing!" one of the operators shouted over the hum of the overhead fans.

On the laptop screen, a bright green progress bar suddenly shot from zero to one hundred percent, accompanied by a sharp, melodic chime. A new folder popped up on the desktop, labeled: Target Located - GPS Coordinates Active.

Miller leaned over the screen, staring at the newly decrypted data stream. "That’s... that’s an abandoned server farm in an industrial park outside of Newark. Is that where she’s holding your sister?"

"That’s where Chloe is operating her entire shell network," Elena said, standing up from the wooden crate and adjusting her vest. "And if my terminal payload did its job, her physical security systems—including the biometric locks on the holding room doors—just defaulted to open."

Miller didn't hesitate. He grabbed his radio, switching back to the primary tactical channel now that the frequency jammer had been disabled by the server override. "All units, abort perimeter hold at Pier 42. Reroute all strike teams to the industrial park at 440 Industrial Parkway in Newark, New Jersey. Suspect is located on-site with the hostage."

As the tactical team scrambled back toward the exit, bursting through the side door into the fresh air of the Brooklyn docks, Elena paused for a fraction of a second. Her phone buzzed in her pocket with a new local notification. She pulled it out and looked at the screen.

It wasn't a text message from Chloe or the kidnappers. It was an automated security alert from her penthouse apartment back in Manhattan: Front Door Sensor Triggered - Keycard Used by Unauthorized User.

Elena stared at the notification, her heart skipping a beat. There was only one other person in the city who still possessed a master override keycard to her penthouse—and he was currently sitting in the back of a federal transport van with handcuffs on his wrists.

Or so she thought.
