Chapter 11 - Ghosts of the Past

The silence inside the speeding tactical SUV felt suffocating. Agent Miller stared at the phone resting on the center console, his hand hovering near his holster as the smooth, chilling voice of David echoed through the cabin.
"David?" Miller muttered under his breath, his brow furrowing as he mentally cross-referenced the name against federal databases. "Wait... David Vance? Marcus’s older brother? The financial analyst who supposedly died in the Atlantic aviation accident eighteen months ago?"
"The one and only," David’s voice replied smoothly through the speaker, catching Miller's words with casual amusement. "Death is such a convenient administrative fiction when you have enough offshore capital to buy a new identity in the Cayman Islands. Isn't that right, Agent Miller? Or should I call you by your real badge number?"
Miller stiffened, his hand dropping away from his holster as he stared at the phone in absolute disbelief. "How do you know my badge number?"
"I know everything that passes through federal routing servers in this district," David laughed lightly. "Just like I knew Elena would tear through Marcus's pathetic little amateur setup and lead you straight to my secondary server farm in Newark. You walked right into the trap, Agent Miller. And by the time your tactical team breaches that warehouse, there won't be a single server left powered on."
Elena leaned forward, her voice sharp and steady as she spoke directly into the phone. "You set up Marcus from the beginning. You used his corporate access to drain my firm's accounts, and when the SEC started closing in, you let him take the fall so you could slip out of the shadows."
"Marcus was always so eager to prove himself to our mother," David replied, a hint of genuine contempt creeping into his tone. "He wanted the penthouse, the status, the illusion of success. I merely provided the blueprint, darling. You built the empire, Marcus provided the key, and I collected the dividends."
"Where is Maya?" Elena demanded, ignoring his corporate philosophy. "If you've touched a single hair on her head—"
"Maya is quite comfortable," David interrupted smoothly. "She’s currently enjoying a cup of tea in the very same Newark server farm your tactical team is rushing toward. But I wouldn't rush too fast, Elena. Because the moment your tactical van crosses the industrial park's security gate, my automated protocol will permanently wipe every financial record linking my name to those accounts—and wipe Maya’s memory card clean along with it."
Miller slammed his hand onto the dashboard, pressing the radio call button. "All units, hold your position! Do not cross the industrial park gate at 440 Industrial Parkway! We have a remote logic bomb triggered on the target network!"
Too late.
Through the tinted windows of the SUV, as they rounded the final highway curve leading into the industrial district, a massive flash of blue light illuminated the horizon ahead. The sprawling brick-and-steel server farm warehouse in the distance suddenly went completely dark, its exterior security lights flickering twice before dying out entirely.
On the console, Elena’s phone screen went blank as the live connection to David’s terminal was abruptly terminated with a sharp digital pop.
David’s voice vanished into a wall of absolute static.
Miller stared out the windshield at the darkened warehouse complex ahead, his face grim. "The server farm just went off-grid. They scrubbed the entire database."
Elena picked up her phone, staring at the dead screen. Her expression wasn't one of defeat; instead, a quiet, calculated focus settled over her features. She swiped twice on the glass, bringing up an encrypted offline directory that she had cached locally on her own device three days ago, before the raid even began.

"He thinks he scrubbed the database," Elena said softly, a subtle, confident smile touching the corners of her lips. "He didn't realize I planted a live-mirror proxy inside his primary routing hub three years ago, back when we were still married."
