Chapter 1 - The Threshold of Glass

The morning sunlight cut through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse kitchen, illuminating the chaos scattered across the imported Italian tile. Elena sat cross-legged on the cool stone, her white sleeveless wrap dress contrasting sharply with the heaps of designer clothes, shoes, and archived personal files pulled ruthlessly from her walk-in closet.

Teresa stood over her, the older woman's face flushed with a mixture of self-righteous fury and deep-seated entitlement. In Teresa’s hands was a silk blouse, held up like a piece of questionable evidence.

"My son paid for everything!" Teresa barked, her voice echoing off the minimalist quartz countertops.

Elena did not flinch. She took a slow, measured breath, feeling the cool air fill her lungs before she looked up at her mother-in-law. Marcus stood a few paces behind his mother, dressed in his crisp light blue button-down shirt and dark trousers, looking predictably helpless, his hands buried deep in his pockets. He avoided Elena’s gaze, studying the grain of the hardwood floor as if it held the secrets of the universe.

Elena reached up, adjusting the strap of her small white handbag resting beside her on the floor. When Marcus stepped forward to drape a white fabric over her shoulders in a pathetic, performative gesture of false comfort, Elena stopped him with a sharp, icy glare.

"Dare one more thing, Teresa, and tomorrow you won’t have a key to this house," Elena said, her voice dropping to a low, firm register that carried far more authority than Teresa’s screeching.

Marcus blinked, finally looking up. "Elena, honey, my mom is just trying to help us reorganize—"

"Help?" Elena interrupted smoothly. She tilted her wrist, exposing her smartphone. The device was unlocked, its screen prominently displaying an active video recording interface alongside a stream of urgent, flashing system notifications. Her thumb hovered near the record button, capturing every twitch of Teresa’s jaw and every spineless slouch of her husband’s posture.

Through the open archway of the front entrance, the dull metallic sound of drilling echoed through the quiet penthouse. Elena didn't need to turn around to know what was happening. A licensed locksmith, wearing a bright blue cap, was already unbolting the heavy brass deadbolt and replacing the internal cylinder with an entirely new security mechanism.

Elena looked directly into the camera lens of her phone, letting out a breath that sounded suspiciously like a victorious laugh.

"I got him!" Elena announced clearly into the device's microphone, panning the camera from Teresa's pale, horrified face over to the distant figure of the locksmith finishing his work at the front door.

Teresa dropped the silk blouse. It fluttered down like a wounded bird onto the pile of clothes. "What did you just do?" she gasped, taking a step backward.

Elena slowly stood up, brushing off the hem of her white dress. She caught her reflection in the smoked-glass pantry door, offering a subtle, triumphant smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. At that exact second, a new banner notification flashed violently across the top of her phone screen: "Company Card Revoked. System Access Terminated."

Marcus paled, staring at his wife in sheer horror. "Wait... what card did you just revoke?"
