Chapter 10 - The Phantom Override

The black tactical SUV sped across the bridge toward the New Jersey turnpike, its tires humming against the concrete expansion joints. In the front passenger seat, Agent Miller stared intently at his tactical tablet as the GPS coordinates for the Newark server farm updated in real-time.

In the back seat, Elena sat in absolute silence, her eyes fixed on the glowing screen of her smartphone. The security notification from her Manhattan penthouse remained stamped on her display: Front Door Sensor Triggered - Keycard Used by Unauthorized User at 10:14 AM.

She swiped open the auxiliary camera feed tied to the penthouse foyer. The high-definition wide-angle lens showed the bright modern hallway completely empty—except for a single, heavy canvas duffel bag sitting right in the middle of the Italian tile floor, abandoned near the newly replaced deadbolt.

"Agent Miller," Elena said quietly, her voice cutting through the hum of the engine. "Marcus didn't have his master keycard when the marshals arrested him this morning, did he?"

Miller glanced sideways from his tablet. "Negative. Our intake officers confiscated his wallet, his phone, and his key ring at the scene. Why do you ask?"

"Because someone just used a master keycard to open the front door of my penthouse five minutes ago," Elena replied, holding up her phone so Miller could see the live camera feed of the empty hallway and the mysterious duffel bag.

Miller frowned, tapping his comms unit. "Control, run a status check on the prisoner transport unit carrying Marcus Vance to the federal holding facility downtown. Did they make any unscheduled stops?"

A burst of static crackled over the radio before the dispatcher's voice came through, sounding tense and hurried. "Negative on unscheduled stops, Miller. But... wait. The transport van just arrived at the federal intake dock. The officers are opening the back doors now."

On the radio speaker, the tinny sound of a heavy metal latch sliding open echoed through the cabin. A second later, a shout of absolute shock erupted from the dispatcher's audio feed.

"The transport van is empty! Repeat, the prisoner is gone!"

Miller slammed his hand against the dashboard. "Dammit! How did he slip the cuffs?"

"He didn't slip the cuffs," Elena said, her voice turning ice-cold as she pieced together the digital trail. "Marcus didn't run the shell accounts alone. He was just the front man. The person pulling the strings from the very beginning wasn't Chloe, and it wasn't Teresa."

Miller turned to look at her, his eyes wide with sudden realization. "Then who?"

Before Elena could answer, her phone rang loudly in her hand. The caller ID didn't show a restricted number this time. It displayed Marcus’s personal cell phone number—the same phone that the federal marshals had allegedly confiscated during the arrest at the penthouse.

Elena slowly pressed the accept button and put it on speaker, holding the device between them.

"Hello, Elena," a smooth, calm voice spoke through the speakerphone. It wasn't Marcus. It was a voice Elena hadn't heard in over two years—a voice belonging to someone the entire federal database listed as deceased in a private plane crash off the coast of Maine.

"David," Elena whispered, the color draining entirely from her face.

The voice on the other end chuckled softly, a warm, familiar sound that carried a lethal undercurrent of pure malice. "Did you really think Marcus was smart enough to build an offshore Ponzi scheme all by himself, darling? He’s just a puppet. And now that you've unlocked the vault for me, it's time to settle our accounts."
