Chapter 5 - Sirens in the Canyon

The muffled wail of a siren began to drift up from the street far below, cutting through the morning calm of the upscale neighborhood. It started as a faint, distant hum, but within seconds, it grew into a sharp, undeniable crescendo of emergency vehicles turning onto the private drive of the luxury building.

Marcus froze, his hands still gripping the edge of the mahogany desk. He looked from Elena to the open doorway of the safe room, listening as the Doppler effect of the sirens signaled their arrival right outside the lobby.

"Federal marshals?" Marcus breathed, his voice cracking into a high-pitched squeak. "Elena, you didn't call federal marshals. This is a civil matter! At worst, it’s a domestic financial dispute!"

Elena walked over to the desk, calmly picking up her smartphone and tilting the screen toward him. A high-priority calendar alert was flashing in bright red: SEC Fraud Investigation - Asset Freeze Executed at 09:15 AM.

"It stopped being a civil matter the moment you routed foreign investment capital through a shell company registered in the Cayman Islands using my corporate ID," Elena explained, her voice devoid of any emotion. "That’s wire fraud across international borders, Marcus. The SEC doesn't care about our marriage counseling. They care about federal felonies."

Teresa stopped in the doorway of the safe room, her face completely drained of color. "International accounts? Marcus, what did you do?"

"I was trying to invest!" Marcus yelled, his composure completely shattering as he began pacing the small confines of the room, running his hands frantically through his short brown hair. "I was trying to build a separate portfolio so we wouldn't have to live off her handouts forever! It was supposed to be a legitimate hedge fund!"

"A hedge fund run out of a PO box in the Caymans with no registered traders and zero SEC filings?" Elena raised an eyebrow. "Even a first-year law student knows that's a classic Ponzi setup. You didn't build a portfolio, Marcus. You stole from my firm's venture partners to pay off your mother's mortgage and your sister's credit cards, and you used my digital signature to sign off on every single transaction."

Heavy footsteps echoed down the polished hallway outside the master suite. Loud, authoritative knocks hammered against the newly re-keyed front door, followed by a booming voice announcing, "Federal Law Enforcement! Open the door!"

Teresa flinched at the sound, pressing herself against the hallway wall as if she could melt right through the drywall. She looked at Elena with pleading, desperate eyes. "Elena, please. I didn't know anything about the Caymans. I swear to you, I thought the money came from Marcus's corporate bonuses. You know how he boasts about his deals."

"I know everything, Teresa," Elena replied softly, not unkindly, but with an unyielding finality. "That's why I gave the locksmith instructions to install a second deadbolt specifically for the service elevator."

Marcus stopped pacing, staring at his wife in sheer horror. "The service elevator? What are you talking about?"

Before Elena could answer, the sound of heavy boots grinding against the private balcony doors echoed from the master bedroom. Two agents in dark tactical windbreakers stepped over the glass threshold, having bypassed the front door entirely via the building's exterior maintenance rig.

One of the agents stepped into the study, his hand resting casually near his sidearm, scanning the room before his eyes locked onto Marcus.

"Marcus Vance?" the agent asked, pulling a laminated badge from his pocket.

Marcus opened his mouth to speak, but no sound came out. He slowly raised his hands, his knees buckling slightly as the reality of his prison sentence crashed down upon him.

Elena stepped back into the hallway, leaving the two men standing amidst the wreckage of her marriage, watching as the federal agent pulled out a pair of steel handcuffs. But as she checked her phone one last time, a new alert popped up from an unknown number: "We have your sister, Elena. Drop the charges or she pays the price."
