Chapter 2 - The Sound of Deadbolts Turning

The metallic click of the new front door lock sealing shut reverberated through the hallway like a gunshot. Teresa’s mouth opened and closed in rapid succession, a pale imitation of a fish gasping for air. The locksmith in the blue cap packed his tools into a heavy canvas bag, nodded respectfully at Elena, and stepped past the stunned Marcus without uttering a single word.

"You changed the locks?" Teresa shrieked, finally finding her voice as she lunged toward the foyer, only to find the heavy mahogany door unyielding against her frantic tugging. She rattled the brass handle twice before spinning around to face her son. "Marcus! Tell your wife to unlock this door right now! I left my medication in the guest suite, and I demand an explanation for this absolute disrespect!"

Marcus ran a hand through his short brown hair, his eyes darting between his enraged mother and Elena, who stood leaning casually against the kitchen island. The white fabric still draped loosely over one of Elena’s shoulders, a stark reminder of the domestic theater that had just played out.

"Elena, babe, let's be reasonable here," Marcus began, his voice taking on that oily, conciliatory tone he always used when he wanted to sweep a crisis under the rug. "You can't just lock my mother out of the apartment. She helped us furnish this place. She has rights here."

Elena crossed her arms, the smartphone still gripped tightly in her right hand, its screen glowing with the persistent amber warning of revoked corporate access. "Rights, Marcus? On whose deed? Check the paperwork. This apartment was purchased three years before we even met, using my pre-marital inheritance and my corporate equity. Your mother’s name isn't on the title, and neither is yours."

Teresa gasped, clutching her chest theatrically. "Lies! My son built your entire career! He financed your little lifestyle before you grew too big for your boots!"

"Did he?" Elena stepped forward, her voice dangerously quiet. "Let's ask him. Marcus, go ahead. Tell your mother whose name is listed as the primary guarantor on the corporate accounts you've been draining for your sister's boutique."

Marcus flinched. The color drained entirely from his face, leaving his skin a sickly gray under the bright kitchen lights. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out.

Teresa looked at her son, her expression shifting from fury to sudden, sharp suspicion. "Marcus? What is she talking about? What boutique?"

Before Marcus could stammer out a defense, Elena's phone vibrated violently against her palm. A second notification slid down from the top of the screen, accompanied by a sharp chime that seemed deafening in the tense silence of the penthouse: "Primary Account Balance: $14.22."
