Chapter 6 - The Ghost in the System

The cold glow of the smartphone screen illuminated the dim hallway as Elena stared at the text message from the unknown number. The words hung there like a digital threat, burning into her retinas. We have your sister, Elena. Drop the charges or she pays the price.

She froze, her thumb hovering over the screen. Her younger sister, Maya, was supposed to be on a flight from London to New York this morning, landing around noon. Had the kidnappers intercepted her at the terminal, or was this a bluff orchestrated by someone closer to home?

Marcus, currently being escorted out of the study in handcuffs by the federal agents, caught sight of Elena's frozen expression. A desperate, manic light flickered in his eyes.

"Did you get a message?" Marcus blurted out, stumbling backward as the agent pulled him toward the master exit. "Is it Chloe? Did Chloe reach out to you?"

Elena didn't answer him. She turned sharply toward the agent in charge, holding up her phone. "Agent Miller, look at this. My sister’s flight landed twenty minutes ago, but I just received this threat. I need a trace on this IP address immediately."

Agent Miller glanced at the screen, his professional demeanor instantly shifting into high alert. He signaled his partner to hold Marcus in the hallway while he pulled out his own secure radio. "Control, we have a possible collateral hostage situation tied to the Vance asset seizure. Run an immediate cell tower triangulation on incoming message routing to this device."

Teresa, still pressed against the corridor wall, let out a low, ragged sob. "Chloe... oh god, what does Chloe have to do with this? She’s just a girl running a boutique!"

"Your daughter isn't running a boutique, Teresa," Elena said, her voice cutting through the older woman's panic like a razor blade. "She’s been managing the offshore shell accounts Marcus set up. She knew every single illegal wire transfer that went through those accounts. And if Marcus’s arrest jeopardizes her freedom, she has every reason to pull a stunt like this."

Marcus shook his head violently, his face turning red against the steel cuffs. "No! Chloe wouldn't kidnap Maya! They’re friends! They went to college together!"

"People do desperate things when federal indictments start dropping, Marcus," Elena said coldly. She spun on her heel, ignoring her husband's frantic protests as she walked back into the living room.

Agent Miller followed closely behind her, tapping commands into his tactical tablet. "We have a rough location on the ping. It’s coming from an industrial warehouse district down by the Brooklyn Navy Yard. But Mrs. Vance... look at the secondary ping."

Elena looked over his shoulder. The map on the tablet showed two distinct GPS signals originating from the exact same warehouse. One was the burner phone that sent the text. The other was Maya’s smart luggage beacon.

"She's actually there," Elena whispered, a cold wave of adrenaline washing over her system.

Before Agent Miller could coordinate a tactical backup team, Elena’s phone rang loudly, breaking the heavy tension in the room. The caller ID simply read: Restricted.

Elena pressed the accept button and put it on speakerphone, holding the phone steady for the agent to record.

"I know you're listening, Elena," a distorted, synthesized voice crackled through the speaker. "You have exactly two hours to sign over your entire venture capital equity portfolio to our corporate holding account, or your sister goes swimming in the East River."

Teresa gasped, covering her mouth with both hands. Marcus slumped against the wall, his eyes wide with terror.

Elena took a slow, deep breath, her face hardening into a mask of pure iron. She looked straight into Agent Miller’s eyes, nodded once, and then spoke directly into the phone.

"You picked the wrong person to threaten," Elena said calmly. "I already traced your signal. The FBI is outside your warehouse right now."

A sharp laugh echoed from the other end of the line before the call disconnected with a harsh click. Immediately after, a new notification flashed across Elena's screen: a live video feed link showing Maya tied to a chair in a dark, concrete room, with a digital timer counting down from 119 minutes.
