Chapter 7 - The Navy Yard Grid

The tactical van raced down the highway, its tires kicking up spray from the wet asphalt as Agent Miller coordinated the assault units over the encrypted radio channel. In the back of the van, Elena stared down at her phone screen. The live video feed from the warehouse was still active, showing Maya sitting upright in a metal folding chair, her wrists bound with heavy plastic zip-ties, a piece of dark duct tape pressed firmly across her mouth.

Maya’s eyes were wide with terror, darting around the dimly lit, cavernous room. Every few seconds, the digital countdown timer in the corner of the video frame ticked downward, a relentless reminder of how little time they had left.

"Hold on, Maya," Elena whispered to the glowing screen, her knuckles turning white as she gripped the edges of the device.

Agent Miller turned around from the front passenger seat, holding a tactical map printed on thick cardstock. "Mrs. Vance, we’re two minutes out from the target perimeter. The warehouse is located at Pier 42 in the Navy Yard. It’s an abandoned shipping terminal owned by a holding shell—ironically, one of the exact same shell corporations your husband used to funnel the initial seed money."

Elena looked up, her expression cold and analytical. "Chloe. It has to be Chloe. She’s the only other person with signing authority on that specific shell entity besides Marcus."

"We’re going to secure the perimeter first, then deploy a dynamic entry team through the loading bay," Agent Miller instructed, his voice steady and calm. "I need you to stay in this vehicle, Mrs. Vance. Protocol dictates that civilians—"

"I’m not staying in this van," Elena interrupted, her voice leaving no room for argument. "That's my sister on that screen. And unlike Marcus, Chloe actually knows how to wipe a server remotely. If she realizes the FBI is moving in before we locate the primary hard drive containing the financial records, she’ll nuke the entire database, and we'll lose every shred of evidence needed to put them away for good."

Agent Miller studied her for a long moment, weighing the risk against her undeniable expertise in the case. Finally, he nodded curtly. "All right. You ride with the second entry unit. But you wear a ballistic vest, and you follow my lead every step of the way. Am I understood?"

"Crystal clear," Elena said, immediately accepting the heavy Kevlar vest handed to her by one of the tactical operators and strapping it tightly over her white wrap dress.

The van slowed to a screeching halt, pulling into the shadowed alcove of a rusted corrugated metal warehouse down by the Brooklyn waterfront. The air outside smelled of salt, diesel, and decaying timber. Heavy gray clouds hung low over the East River, casting an eerie, monochromatic pallor over the abandoned shipping docks.

The tactical team piled out of the vehicle in synchronized silence, their dark gear blending seamlessly into the shadows of the rusted architecture. Elena stepped out right behind Agent Miller, her eyes locked onto the rusted side door of the warehouse marked with a faded, peeling stencil: Building 7 - Authorized Personnel Only.

Agent Miller raised his hand, signaling the team to halt as they reached the heavy metal door. He pressed his ear against the cold steel, listening for any sounds of movement inside.

"On my count," Miller whispered, raising his tactical breaching tool. "Three... two... one."

With a deafening crash, the door flew inward, splintering the rotting wooden frame. The team swarmed inside, weapons raised, sweeping the darkened interior with high-intensity weapon lights.

Elena rushed in right behind them, her eyes frantically scanning the gloom for her sister. But as the flashlights swept across the vast, empty concrete floor, they didn't find Maya sitting in the chair. They found an empty metal folding chair, a discarded roll of duct tape, and a glowing laptop resting on a wooden crate in the center of the room.

Elena froze, walking up to the crate and staring down at the laptop screen. On the display, a prerecorded video file was looping endlessly, showing Maya tied to the chair. And right beside it, a new text file was blinking on the desktop, titled: Too Late, Elena.

Before Agent Miller could shout a warning, the heavy metal door behind them slammed shut with a thunderous metallic crash, and the heavy automated deadbolt clicked into place from the outside.
