Chapter 9 - The Dying Declaration

Julian’s heart slammed against his ribs as he stared at the blinking red light of the microcassette recorder. He glanced back at the open doorway of the ICU room; the hallway was completely empty, illuminated only by the sterile hum of overhead fluorescent tubes. Without a sound, Julian reached under the blanket, retrieved the small device, and pressed the stop button.
The tape inside was fully wound. He hit play, bringing the tiny speaker close to his ear while keeping his eyes fixed on the entrance.
Arthur Vance’s raspy, labored voice crackled through the miniature speaker, distorted by static but unmistakably clear.
"Julian... if you're hearing this... it means Richard's vultures finally closed in. Don't trust the documents on the 40th floor. The real charter... the one with our grandfather's original amendment protecting the primary bloodline... is locked inside the floor safe in my private study at the estate. Richard thinks he has the master key from the bank box, but he's holding a decoy. Guard the estate tonight, Julian. They're coming for the house before dawn."
The recording clicked off with a sharp metallic snap.
Julian stood frozen for a moment, the gravity of his uncle's warning settling over him like lead. Richard wasn't just trying to control the corporate board through legal maneuvers; he was executing a physical takeover of the Vance family ancestral estate—a sprawling, isolated property on the cliffs overlooking the northern bay, filled with decades of historical documents, family heirlooms, and unrecorded assets that could permanently strip Richard of his legal standing.
Julian looked down at his sleeping uncle, gently squeezing his cold hand one last time. "I'll protect it, Uncle Arthur. I swear it."
He turned on his heel, pocketed the recorder, and walked briskly out of the ICU room. He didn't take the elevator this time; he took the emergency stairwell, descending four flights of concrete stairs in double time to avoid any security checkpoints or lingering guards that Richard might have left behind in the lobby.
As he burst through the heavy steel exit door into the cool midnight air, his town car was waiting idling by the curb, but the driver wasn't his usual employee. A stranger in a dark tactical jacket sat behind the wheel, staring straight ahead.
Julian stopped dead in his tracks three feet from the passenger door. He slowly reached into his pocket, his fingers wrapping around the metal casing of his car keys, ready to use them as a weapon if necessary.
The car window rolled down with a soft mechanical hum, revealing a familiar face illuminated by the dashboard lights. It was Marcus Sterling’s personal driver, a retired military veteran named Frank whom Julian had known for years.
"Get in, Mr. Vance," Frank whispered urgently, unlocking the passenger door from the inside. "Marcus isn't who you think he is anymore, but some of us still have a conscience."
May you like
Julian hesitated for a split second, then yanked the door open and slid into the passenger seat, slamming it shut behind him. "Drive to the North Cliff estate. Now."
