Chapter 12 - Checkmate in the Study

Richard froze, the leather-bound document still clutched in his hand. He slowly stood up, turning around to face the doorway where Julian stood blocking the only exit, his posture rigid and his eyes locked entirely on his cousin.
Marcus Sterling stepped backward instinctively, his hand twitching toward his pocket before he realized the futility of the gesture under Julian’s steady gaze.
"Julian," Richard said, recovering his composure with a slick, condescending smirk. "I must admit, you are far more persistent than our dear uncle gave you credit for. Leaving the hospital ICU just to watch us pack up your family history?"
"That document in your hand isn't going to save you, Richard," Julian said, taking a slow, deliberate step into the room. "The moment you walk out of this house with stolen property, every federal asset freeze order we filed five years ago reactivates automatically under the original terms of that exact charter."
Richard laughed, a harsh, echoing sound that bounced off the mahogany bookshelves. "You always were an optimist, Julian. You think a piece of paper from 1974 supersedes modern corporate restructuring law? I have the signatures. I have the board quorum. And now, I have the grandfather's blessing."
"You have a stolen prop," Julian replied calmly.
Richard’s smile faltered slightly. "What did you say?"
"Check the seal on the ribbon," Julian said, gesturing slightly with his chin. "Our grandfather was left-handed. Every official trust charter he signed personally was sealed with a silver wax stamp bearing his private family crest, not the gold corporate seal you're holding."
Richard’s eyes dropped instantly to the leather cylinder in his hand. He flipped it over, tearing at the red silk ribbon with trembling fingers. He pulled open the heavy parchment scroll inside, scanning the bottom seal.
The seal was blank. A clever, perfectly executed decoy.
"Where is it?" Richard hissed, dropping the fake document onto the Persian rug as his face twisted with sudden, blinding rage. He signaled the two tactical operators behind him. "Take him down. I want him unconscious before the police arrive."
The two large men surged forward simultaneously, closing the distance in a fraction of a second. Julian didn't flinch. Instead, he dropped into a low combat stance just as the first operator swung a heavy right hook toward his jaw.
Julian ducked beneath the punch, drove his palm upward into the attacker’s sternum with lethal precision, and spun around, using the man's momentum to send him crashing directly into a towering mahogany bookshelf that collapsed with a thunderous roar of falling books and splintered wood.
The second operator drew a heavy tactical baton, stepping over his fallen partner with a snarl. But before he could swing, the heavy oak study doors swung wide open behind him, and Frank stepped into the room holding a leveled service revolver.

"Drop the baton, son," Frank said, his voice entirely steady. "Or your next breath will be your last."
